To all whom it may concern.'
n a citizen oi the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county ot Cook and State ot llllinois, have invented a new and usetul llmproveinent in Bottle-Capping Devices, ot which the following is a specification.
My invention relates, more particularly, to devices for applying caps, such as. metal caps required to be bent into lace, to the mouths of bottles to seal them.. y primary object is to provide a novel, simple and 1nexpensive construction of bottle-capping device which will be highly edective in operation and durable, an more particularly to provide improvements in the head member of the device which carries the' ca -engaging cup, t0 the end that this part o the structure may be simple of construction, economically manufactured and be very rigid and durable, and engage the upright of the device and on which it is supported, in a manner to' prevent the objectionable canting ot the head on its support. v

The particular construction illustrated is formed ot a base member represented at t comprising a base-plate 5 at which the device is adapted to be supported ona table or any other suitable support, this baseplate being provided with screw-receiving openings 6 at which it may be rigidly secured in place on the support, the base-plate being formed at opposite sides, adjacent its rear end, with upright side-plates 7 preterably formed integral with the base-plate 5 and having inwardly-bent flanges 8 .at their rear edges, the lower ends of which reach short ot the plate 5 and beneath which an upstanding rib 9 located at the rear edge lof the' base-plate 5, extends, this rib being preferably integral with the plate 5. 'llvhe device also comprises an upright represented at 10, shown as 'formed of a pair of bars 11 the upper portions ot which extend in Hatwise-opposed parallel relation to each other with a filler bar 12 interposed therebetween where the bars are relatively light, the parts just described being rigidly secured together,

rll`he particular illustrated construction of head 21 is formed of two parallel sleeve- like portions 22 and 23 connected together in spaced relation by a web section 24, the head at its sleeve portion 22 surrounding the,up'
per portion of the upright 10 andbeing verticall adjustable thereon, the opposite side wal s of the sleeve portion 22 containing series ot openings 25 adapted to receive a pin 26 which would also extend through the one ot the openings 20 inregistration therewith. rlhe openings 25 are closely spaced apart, and in combination with the spacing between the openings 20 permit of relatively tine vertical adjustments of the head on the upright 10. The sleeve portion 23 forms a housing tor the upwardly-extending stem 27 of the cup 28 provided for engagement with the cap to be secured in position to the mouth ot a bottle positioned on the base 4, the stein 27 being vertically movable in the sleeve portion 23 and cooperating with an operating lever 29 pivoted at one end, as represented at 30, to the web 24 and connected between its ends with .the stem 27, as through the medium of the rivet 31 which extends through slots 32 1n opposite sides of the sleeve member 23, 1t being understoodfrom the foregoing that by the arrangement of the lever as stated the stem 27 and with it the cup 28 may be vertically moved, for the purpose of forclng a cap into applied position on a bottle and thereafter elevating the cup to permit of the removal of the bottle.
The head shown is formed of two pieces of metal the one bent upon itself to form the sleeve portion 23 and the laterally-extending plate-portions 33 which fit latwise together. The other piece of metal 1s bent to form the major portion of the sleeve portion 22, from the open side of which the plate-like-portions 34 extend in parallel relation but spaced apart to permit the plates 33 to be telescoped therewith to the position shown in the drawings, in which pos1t1on these four plates it flatwise together and are rigidly secured in such positlon as by the rivets represented at 35. The partsof the structureojust described are so proportioned that the outer edges 36 of the plates 33 extend flush with the adjacent ends of the 1nner surfaces of the opposite side walls of the sleeve 22," and form one of the walls of the sleeve member 22. The rivet 30, as shown, passes throu h these four-plate-port1ons33 and 34 whic thus form a very strong and rigid web portion and a very substantial support for the lever 29. It is desirable that means be provided for frictionally holding the lever 29 and the stem 27 in elevated position in order that the cup 28 shall not obstruct the positioning of a bottle on the base portion 4, and as desirable means for accom lishing this I provide spring. washers 38a` w ich surround the shank of the rivet 30 at opposite ends thereof. and are interposed between the opposite sides of the head 24 and the spaced arms of the'lever 29.
While the head 21 provided, as stated, is of very 'simple construction and may be economically manufactured, it presents a high degree of rigidity, and the sleeve member 22 while being free to be adjusted vert1- cally on the upright`10, is caused to fit the uprlght with such a degree of snugness, and is so rigid, that objectionable canting of the head on the upright is prevented. The stem 27 is shown as formed of a pair of iiatwiseopposed bars 37 riveted to ther as indicated at 38 and having their ower ends outwardly turned to form horizontally-extendinglugs 39 through the medium of which the cup 28 issecured in position on the stem,
vthe cup being shown as of a shape commonly employed and containing in its upper portion a cushioning pad 40 which may be of any suitable material, as for example rubber. The cup 28 is secured to the lugs 39 through the medium of the rivets 41, a metal disk 42 being preferably interposed between the lugs 39 and the upper wall of the cup as shown and through which disk the rivets 41 extend. The attachment of the cup 28 to the stem 27, as stated, is of advantage, as a rigid and secure fastening of the cup to the stem, resisting tendency to'the twisting or distorting of the cup, which, if it should occur prevents the eap vfrom being properly applied to the bottle, is provided.
While I have illustrated and described a particular construction constituting an embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be understood as intending to limit it thereto as the same ma be variously modilied and altered and t e invention otherwise embodied, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. In a bottle-capping device, a head comprising a pair of members of loop form presenting plate-portions, said plate-portions overlapplng each other throughout a portion only of the length of said head to present sleeve portions at opposite ends of said head, and means securing said members together at said plate-portions.
2. In a bottle-capping device, a head coinprising a pair of members of loop form presenting plate-portions, said plate-portions of one of said members being located be tween the plate-portions of the other of said members throughout a portion only of the length of said head, to present sleeve portions at opposite ends of said head, and means securing said members together at said plate-portions.
3. In a bottle-capping device, a head comprising a pair of members of loop form resenting Aplate-portions, said plate-portlons of one of said members being located between the plate-portions of the other of said members throughout a portion only of the length of said head, to present sleeve por tions at opposite ends of said head, the ends of the inner ones of said plate-portions forming with the walls of the loop portion of the other of said members, a wall of the sleeve portion of the latter, and means securing said members together at said plateportions.
4. In a bottle-capping device, the combination with an upright, of a head carried thereby formed of a pair of members of loop form presenting plate-portions, said plateportions overlapping each other throughout a portion only of the length of said head t0 present sleeve portions at opposite ends of said head, means securing said members together at said plate-portlons, one of lll lll

portions, and means securing said memberstogether at said plate-portions, one of said loop portions being adapted to receive a supporting upright.

9. ln a bottle-capping device, the combination or an upright provided with a head having a guide portion, a bar movable in said guide portion and having a cap-engaging cup, a lever for operating said bar, a pin pivotally connecting said lever With said head, and a spring Washer surrounding-said pin and located between said lever and said head for rictionally holding the lever in the various positions to which it is movable on its ivot.
10. n a bottle-capping device, the combination of an upright, a cap-engaging member movable thereon, a lever pivoted on a part of the ldevice other than said member and through the medium of which said member is operated, and means aty the pivotal connection of said lever with said device for holding said lever in the various positions to Which it is movable on its pivot.
