Description

A. SPARROW.
REVERSIBLE FULCRUM ARHANGENHENT APPLICATION FiLED OCT. 27,1921.
Patented Aug. 8, 1922.`
UNITED STATES.
PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR SPARROW, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICA STEEL FOUNDBIES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
REVERSIBLE FU'LCRUM ARRANGEMENT.
Application led October 27, 1921.
of Illinois. have invented certain new and4 useful Improvements in Reversible Fulcrum Arrangements, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to brake beams and more particularly to reversible fulcrums forming a part thereof.
The object of. this invention is to provide a reversible fulcrum for the truss type of brake beam. which fulcrum may be reversed between right and left-hand positions in a manner to meet service requirements and at the same time which provides a connection to the compression member of the brake beam Without anv longitudinal lost motion.
This and other objects are accomplished by means of the arrangement disclosed on the accompanying sheet of drawings. in Which- Figure l is a side elevation of a brake beam fulcrum post. together with the tension and compression members of the brake beam shown in section;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary top plan view of the same brake beam; and
Figure 3 is a fragmentary rear elevation of the same4 The various novel features of the invention will be apparent from the following description and drawings and Will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the figures of the drawings, it Will be noted that I have. illustrated my invention in connection with a truss type of braktJ beam including a compression member I0. a tension member 11 and a reversible fulcrum post 12 interposed between and connecting same. This fulcrum post receives a brake lever. not shown. in the usual manner.
A rear portion 13 of the fulcrum post 12 extends between flanges 14 of the compression member 10. and has a rear surface 15 which is adapted to frictionally engage the front surface 16 of the web I7 of the compression member 10. This reversible fulcrum post l2 also has at its rear end a proliection i9 which extends through an opening 19 in the web 17 of the compression member. This projection I8 is provided Specification of Letters Patent.

with an opening Q0 for the reception of a Wedge pin 2l whereby the rear surface l5 of the fulcrum post l2 will be pressed against the front surface 16 of the compression member web 17 for frictionallyv holding the fulcrum post 12 in its different adjusted positions. It will be noted that the Wedge pin 2l has a rear inclined surface 2:? which engages the inclined rear wall 23 of the opening 20 and that the front surface 24 ofJ the Wedge key 2l is straight and parallel with andV engages the rear surface 25 of the Web 17 of the compression member l0. It is apparent. therefore. that when the wedge 21 is driven into place the rear surface 1.5 of the fulcrum. post 12 is tightly pressed against the inner surface 16 of the web I7 of. the compression member whereby the fulcrum post is frictionalb7 held in adjusted position.
That portion 13 of the tulcrinn post 12 between the flanges 14 of the compression member is provided with angular ,faces 26 for engaging said fianges 14 for limiting the fulcrum post I2 in its reversible movements.
The front portion of the fulcrun'i post l?. is provided with a tension rod saddle QT having forwardlv extendingl projections 28 so spaced and shaped to permit reversible movements of the fulcrum post It is my intention to cover all modifications of the invention falling within the spirit and scope of the following claims.
I claim:
I. In a brake beam. the combination of :i compression member having a web portion. a fulcrum post having a portion adapted to engage said web portion and having a pro ject-ion extending bevond said compression member, and a Wcdge cooperating with said projection and compression member for pressing said fulcrum post and web portion of the compression member into engagement for frictionall)1 holding the fulcrum post in position.
2. In a brake beam. the combination of a compression member having a Web and tianges. a reversible fulcrum post harinaT a portion interposed between the flanges of said compression member and adapted to engage the web thereof. said fulcrum post extending bevond said compression member, and means cooperating with said extending portion of said post and said compresn a bra-ke beam, the combination of a compression member having a web and flangesT said web haringv an opening, a. reversible fulcrum post having a portion inter.- posed between said flanges and engaging the web, said fulcrum posthaving an apertured projection extending through an opening in the web of the Compression member. and a wedge at the rear of the compression member extending through the opening in said projection for forcing the above mentioned portion of the fulerum post into engagement with the web of said compression membev1 for holding the fulcrum post in adjusted position. l
4. In a bra-ke beam, the combination of a compression member having a web and flanges, said web having an opening, a reversible fulcium 'post heffing a. portion ini terposed between said flanges and engaging theweb, said fulcrum post having an :ipertured projectionV extending' through'4 the opening in the web of'the compression inember, a wedge at the rear of the compression member extending through t e opening in said rejection for forcing te above mentioneg port-ion of the fulcrum post into env gagement with the web of said compression member for holding the fulcrum post in adjusted position, and means for limiting rei'ersible movements of said `fulcrum post.
5. In a brake beam, the combination of a compression member haring a web and anges, said web having an opening, a rei-eisibie fuicrum post having e. portion interposed between said flanges and engaging the web, said fulorum post having an apertured projection extending through the opening in the web of the compression member, and a. Wedge at the rear of the compres- Sion member extending through the opening in said projection for forcing the abovementioned portion of the fuicrlim post into engagement with the web of said compression member for holding.r the'fulcium post in adjusted position. said fulcrum post and flanges cooperating to limit the reversible movementsof said fulerum. post.
Signed a-t Chicago, Illinois. this 18th day of Octobery1921.
