CUT-OUT FOR AUTOMOBILES.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 4, 1922.
Application filed September 4, 1920. Serial No. 408,167.
To all tch-0my it may concern Beit known that I, llnnnnn'r L. h/Ims'rmn. a citizen of the United States, residing at Chandlerville, in the county of Cass and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cut-Outs for Automobiles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention rela-tes to cutouts for automobiles.
An important object of the invention is to provide in combination with a cutout, an.
operating mechanism therefor which is free from the use of springs, thereby avoiding the necessity in either the opening or closingl action of the cutout of exerting' sufficient pressure to overcome such spring.
A further object of the invention is to provide in a device of the above character a link connection between the cutout and the operating handle therefor the connection of the links being such that the cutout is effectually locked in the closed position when moved to such closed position.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent throughmit the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration, is shown preferred embodiment of my invention. and wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout:
Figure lis a side elevation of cutout control constructed vin accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view partly in elevation, showing the mountingl of the rock shaft, and
Figure 3 is a plan view showing the mounting of the cutout` valve and its associated mechanism.
Referring now-more particularly to the drawings, F designates the fioor boards of an automobile having arranged therebelow an exhaust pipe E. The exhaust pipe E is provided in the side wall thereof with a cutout tion forming an opening O. valve coacts with this opening to close the same and embodies outstanding pivot arms 10 and 11.
The yoke 12 is provided, composed of separable sections bolted about the exhaust pipe E as at 13, each of the sections of the yoke embodying an outstanding ear 14 provided with an opening for the reception of a pivot end pivotally connected with the end of the. f
portion 2-1 as at 23, and its lower end pivotally connected as at 24 to the freeend of the arm 15. Y A
A lever 25 extends through a slot S formed in the floor boards F pivotally mounted intermediate its ends in a 'bearing 26 secured to such floor boards. The lower end of this lever is connected by link 27 with the free end of the arm 19 carried by the shaft 17.
It will be seen that when the upper end of the handle 25 is moved forwardly the arm 1S is moved rearwardly and the valve V shifted opening the cutout. lVhen the lever is moved in theropposite direction the valve is closed reaching such closed position at a time when the longitudinal axis of the link 22 lies radially in a line with the pivot point of the shaft 17. It will be obvious that when in this position any movement nnparted to the levers by the valve V because of pressure within theexhaust pipe E is impossible because of the fact that. such force is not directed at an angle to the pivot point of the arm 18 and consequently such force will merely tend to cause a binding of the shaft 17 in its bearing. Initial movenient of the handle 25 forwardly breaks this straight line connection. and the pressure within the exhaust pipek assists iu the opening of the valve V. If desired the link 22 may be made 'adjustable as indicated at 28 to compensate for any wear occurring at the pivot points 23 and 2a and in the bearing 16.
It will be obvious that my device by reason of its simplicity of construction and eiliciency in operation is particularly well adapted for use, and it will likewise be obvious that some change may be made in the same without departing from the spirit of my invention. I do not therefore limit myself to the construction hereinbefore set forth, except as so limited by the subjoined claims.
bearing 16 secured to the Having 110W described my invention what I claim is: v
1, In valve operating mechanisms, means for shifting said valve to open and closed positions comprising, an operating lever and a connection, said lever and said connection embodying a member mounted to Swing about a given aXis, and a link confv nected with the member to be'shil'ted longitudinally thereby, the longitudinal axis of Said link aligning radially with the axis of said member when said valve is in the closed position.
2. In valve operating mechanism, means for shifting said valve to open and closed positions comprising an operating lever Vand a connection said lever and said connection embodying,` a member mounted to swing about a given axis and an adjustable link connected with the4 member to be shifted longitudinally thereby, the lmigitudinalV axis a pivotally mounted rock shaft embodying a pair of arms, a link connecting one of the arms of said rock shaft and the arm of said valve, said linkfaligning radially with the pivotal mounting of the rock shaft when saidvalve is closed, and a link connecting the i'ree end of the other of the arms of said 35 rock shaft and one end of said lever.
1. In valve operating mechanism, means 'for shifting said valve to open and close the same comprising, an arm secured to said valve, a lever pivoted intermediate its ends, a pivotally mounte rock shaft, a pair of armssecurcd to said rock shaft, one of said arms being provided at its free endwith a curved Jortion terminating in a portion substantiallyparalleling the arm, a link connecting the free end ofthe last named portion and the arm of said valve and aligning radially withv the pivotal mounting of Said rock shaft when the valve is in the closed position,.a.nd a link connecting tliefree end of the other of said arms and one end o'l said lever.
In testimony whereof` I hereunto allix my signature. Y
