PAUL sronnn, or eHrcAeo, ILninors.
NTLK-BOTTLE AN GROCERIES HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led May 20, 1920. Serial No. 382,786.
T0 LZZ whom t may 0071 cem Be it known that I, PAUL Sronnn, a citizen of Jugo-Slavia, residing at Chicago, in the county ofr Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Im provements in Milk-Bottle and Groceries Holders, of which the following is a Vspecification.
This invention relates to receptacles for milk bottles, groceries and the like and more particularly to those receptacles which are intended to protect such articles from theft, the weather, and exposure vto dirt or unsanitary conditions.
The general object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature which is simple and inexpensive to construct and which may be quickly and easily installed and operated.
Another object is to provide a structure which may be built and sold complete, the purchaser merely securing the same to the window framing.l Devices of this class are primarily intended for use by occupants of apartments and small houses frequently held under a lease and the tenant has no de sire to make expenditures for more or less permanent alterations of the premises, even if permitted to do so by the owner. The present invention requires no alterations and it may be fastened in place by anyone in a few minutes.
Further objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent as it is better understood by reference to the following specification when read in connection with the accompanying drawing which shows selected embodiments, and in which Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the invention complete and mounted in a window frame.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Figs. 4 and 5 show modified forms of the invention.
Referring to the drawing, the invention is shown to comprise a frame 8 in which the holders 9 and 10 are hingedly mounted. This frame 8 is adapted to fit within a window opening in the manner shown and to be fastened to the window frame 11 and bottom of the partially raised lower sash 12 by hooks 13 or and other suitable means. These fasteners are preferably placed ron the inside of the window frame 11 sol that when the device is in place the window cannot be further opened or the frame 8 removed by anyone on the outside.
The form and number of holders to be mounted in this frame 8 would depend upon the type of goods to be received, but l have found a most satisfactory arrangement to be that shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive in which the holder 9 is intended for milk bottles, and the holder 10, for groceries The holder 9 is constructed with bottom 14 and side walls 15, the latter in the present embodiment being three in number7 forming substantially a triangular prismatic vessel open at its top. This holder is hingedly mounted on one of its vertical edges 16 to the end member 17 of the frame 8' and the radial side walls 15, and 15 of the'holder extending therefrom are preferably of equal length so that when the holder is either in its inward position as shown in solid lines in Fig. 2, or its outward position, as indicated by dotted lines, one of these radial side walls will form a complete closure for the opening in the frame. This opening in the present embodiment is formed by the end member 17, the top and bottommembers 18 and 19 respectively, and the cross piece 2O of the frame 8. A latch 21 of any convenient form is preferably provided on the inside of the frame 8 to automatically engage the wall 15 of the holder 9 when such holder is moved to its inward position to lock the holder in this position.
The groceries holder 10 is shown to comprise oppositely disposed end walls 24 and 25, a base 26, a rear wall 27 and a front wall 28. This holder 10 is hingedly connected at its forward bottom edge 22 to the lower member 19 of the frame 8 and fits the opening formed by the end member 23, the cross piece 20, the top member 18 and the bottom member 19 of such frame. When the holder isin its inward position, as shown in solid lines in Figs. 1 to 3, the front wall 28 forms a complete closure for the opening in the frame, and when moved into its outward po- Patented Mar. 7, 1922. f
sition, as indicated in dotted lines, the base wall 26, the rear wall 27 and portions of' the end walls 2li and 25 perform a like function. The radial distance from the axis of the holder to the top edges oi the wall 28 and.r the wall 27 should obviously be the same. l
A latch 29 corresponding in'unction to the latch 2l on the holder 9 is preferably provided. c
Then goods are expected to be delivered,
`the holders are pushed outwardly into the position indicated by dotted lines. The milk man then puts his bottles in the holder 9 and shoves this holder inwardly until it is latched. The groceryman puts his pareels `into the holder l0 and does likewise. As both of these holders are now locked within the building, the articles therein cany not be stolen and are .fully protected from the weather, dirt, animals, etc. These artimounted in the frame 33 in similar man-` ner. A f
While this device is primarily intended for insertion complete into a window opening, I have shown in Fig. 5 a modified form of the invention in which holders 34; and 35 corresponding to the holders 9 and l() ot the embodiment shown in Figs. l to 3, and of similar construction and arrangement are mounted in a door 36, and operate in the same way. v
This form would generally be built into a new door and the door sold completely equipped though it may readily be seen that a panel corresponding `in general design to the frame 8 of the window device might be manufactured and the same fitted into a door already in use. A
VIt will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departingfrom the spirit or scope of the invenytion or SaCriicing'any of its material adifioaefio vantages, the toi-ms hereinbefore described being merely selected embodiments thereof.
I claim:v
l. In a device of the class described, a portable rectangular frame adapted to be inserted into a window opening and to form with the sash a` closure for said opening, said frame having an opening therein, and a holder mounted lto swing in said opening from a position on one side of said frame to a position on theother side thereo,.and means 4for limiting the swinging movement oit the holder in each direction.
2; A portable receptacle adapted to beinserted into a window casing'and to form with the window sash a closure for the window opening, and'means for fastening said receptacle to the window casing and tothe window to prevent upward or downward movement of said window, said receptacle comprising a frame i'i'tting said window casing, and a holder mounted in said frame and movable from a position on one side of said frame to a position'on the opposite side thereof.
3. In a device of the class described, a
frame having two openings therein, a substantially triangular shaped holder open at the top and having a base and three sides, said holder being hingedly connected at one corner edge to a side edge of one opening in the frame and movable horizontally in said opening, means for limiting the swinging movement oi". the holder in each direction, another holder open at its top and comprisw ing a base, a front wall, a back wall and two end walls, said other holder being hingedly connected at the juncture of its base and front wall to the bottomedge ot the other openingin the 'frame' and movable in said opening, and means for limiting the swinging movement of said other holder.
4. In adevicc of the character described, x
swing in said opening from a position on one side oi" said frame to.a position on the other sido thereof, and means to latch said receptacle in position on the inside of said frame.
