RELEASABLE BALANCED-PRESSURE WRINGER.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHAnnns VELHART and Gnonon R. TOWNSEND, citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of Lowell and town of .VVinchester, respectively, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Releasable Balanced-Pressui'e W ringer; and We do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to that class of wringers shown in our co-pending application Serial No. 327,971, filed Oct. 2, 1919, for Balanced pressure wringer.
In these types of wringers the springs which maintain the wringer rolls inyieldable contact with one another are horizontally disposed in the upper transverse frame member of the wringer and exert a pressure upon the bearings for the upper wringer roll through bell-crank arms, and said springs bear against a floating plate disposed therebetween whereby the pressure efiect of the springs is equalized and by retraction of the floating plate thestress on the springs is immediately released to permit separation of the wringer rolls.
Furthermore, this invention contemplates the use of assembly pins for retaining the 05 upper casing structure of the wringer on the uprights and said pins are quickly detachable for disassembly of the wringer. Furthermore, detachment of the upper casing of the wringer is designed to release the 40 gear-casing cover whereby access is gained to the intermeshinggears 0f the wringer rolls.
It is an object therefore of this invention to construct a wringer having a quickly detachable upper transverse casing frame memher which serves to retain the gear-casing cover in place and which contains resilient means for transmission of pressure through interior cranks to the bearings for the upper wringer roll and with resilient means provided with a quick-releasing mechanism to relieve the same of stress and also to operate as an equalizing device to equalize the pressure effect transmitted to the wringer-roll bearings.

It is also an object of this invention to provide a quickly releasable balanced pres sure wringer with mechanism permitting quick detachment of the upper housing portion of the wringer mechanisms which by release and detachment permits ready removal of the wringer rolls and also permits detachment of the gear-casing cover for the wringerroll gears.
Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the drawings and specification.
The invention in a preferred form is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.

Description. The wringer comprises a base 1 which may have a gear casing 2 integral therewith provided with a detachable cover 3. The gear casing portion 2 affords a frame structure by which the wringer is attached to and supported upon a casing frame structure 4 in, which the driving mechanisms for the wringer are SItHELtGCl. As, shown,
base frame member 1 is provided with uprights 5 and 6 which may or may not be ii'itegral therewith, as desired. Each of said uprights 5 and 6. is substantially of channel section, as shown clearly in Figure 5. Engagedoverthe upper ends. of the respective uprights 5 and 6 is atransverse upper frame memher or housing 7 also of channel section and provided with apertures for registration with corresponding apertures in the upper ends of the uprights 5 and 6 to receive engaged therethrough detachable assembly or retaining pins 8 ach having a head 9 and a handle 10. Said handles 10 are pivoted to the pins 8 so that elevation of the handle to substantially horizontal position will permit the same to be withdrawn with the pins 8 outwardly through the registering apertures and release the assembled members Said upper transverse frame member 7 is provided with longitudinal slots 11, two on each side thereof. and disposed within said member are spiral compression springs 12 each seating in one of two collars 13. Said collars 13 each have transversely extending pin or lug projections 14 extending therethrough and projecting outwardly through and beyond the slots 11. Fitted over the upper frame member 7 is a channelshaped plate or device denoted as a whole by the reference numeral 15 and having guideways in the form of slots 16 on each side thereof? each of which has an upwardly directed portion at its ends in which the outer ends of the respective pins 11 normally seat so that the collars 13 are normally held spaced apart and'said plate 15 acts as an equalizing means between the springs 12, inasmuch as said plate 15 is slidable longitudinally on the member 7. The upper portion of the plate 15 is provided with an aperture with the metal flanged upwardly on the ends thereof, and pivoted therein is a handle 17 having on its lower end a rounded cam surface 18 which normally bears upon the top surface of the frame member '7 as shown in Figure 3. Movement of the handle 17 in either direction transversely of the wringer will serve to elevate the plate 15 thereby displacing the pins 14 from the offset ends of the slots 16 and permit release of the springs 12. Thus the device 15 controls theyielding springs or mechanisms in either their operative or inoperative positions.
The outer ends of each of the springs 12 bear against the collars 19 and said collars rest against the respective ends, of wing screws 20 which are threaded ad iustably through hell cranks 21 pivoted in the "frame member 7. Each of said bell cranks has a rounded portion 22 which bears upon the upper portion of a bearing 23 for the shai t of the upper wringer roll 24%. A lower wringer roll 25 1S provided with a'shaft which rests bearings 26 andthe pressure of the upper roll 24 received through the bearings 22 servesto hold the lower wringer roll 25 seated in its bearings 26. Intermeshing pinions 27 and 28 are provided [upon the shafts for the respective wringer rolls 24 and 25.7
The frame member 7 which fits downperinittng dei'achn'ient of the transii vardly over the uprights and 6 is cut away to form an offset 29, shown clearly in lligures 1 3 and e, which engages over the upper portion of the geaucasing cover 3 to hold the S21E19 in place, and the lower flat end or" said cover abuts against the casino: 4: so that the cover 3 cannot be removed or detached without releasing of the frame member 7 by removal of its retaining pins 8.
Operation.
The upper wringer roll 24: is held yieldably thrust against the lower wringer roll 25 and the two wringer rolls properly disposed in their bearings owing to the thrint of the respective springs 12. The thrust of the springs 1.2 is exerted upon the bearings 22 for the upper wringer roll 2% and is transmitted thereto through the bell cranks 21 which are provided with the adjustabl threaded wing bolts 20 to vary the stress upon the springs and consequently the pressure between the rolls. Regardless of the adjustment of the respective wing bolts 20 the stress upon the respective springs 12 is equalized owing to the fact that said springs seat against collars 13 which are slidable and are held by their pins l lin relation with the slidable or floating plate 15. Furthermore with the springs in released condition, if it is desired to disassemble the l ringer the handles 10 are swung upwardly and out to thrust the assembly pins Eloutwardly so that the same may be withdrawn toge with the handles 10; thus 5'59 framemember 7 with its associated mechanisms from the wringer. Detachment of the frame member 7 also releases the gearcasing cover 3 permitting a removal thereot, and, further, gives access to the wringer rolls which may be also removed with the bearings therefor.
It is obvious, therefore, that the wringer may be quickly dismantled for any purpose are thus held whatsoever such as repair or replacement of parts and again quickly assembled. Furthermore. the horizontal arrangement of the springs for the wringer rolls reduces the size of the wringer considerably and makes a much neater appearance and one which, for compactness, is far more desirable for use on a power driven washing machine than the types heretofore used.
e are aware that numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention. and we therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
Claims.
1. A wringer of the class described comprising a pair of wringer rolls, a plurality of spring means mounted substantially parallel to said rolls to hold the same yieldingly toward one another, a slidable equalizing means disposed between said spring means, and a latching means provided on said equalizing means to latch said spring means in position to transmit pressure to the rolls.
2. A wringer of the class described comprising a pair of rolls, a plurality of re silient means maintaining the same yieldably together, horizontally slidable equalizing mechanism disposed between said resilient means, and latching devices forming a part thereof to latch said mechanism to said resilient means and detachable therefrom to permit release of said resilient means to unstressed position by elevation of said mechanism.
3. In a wringer of the class described a pair of rolls, a plurality of resilient means to hold said rolls yieldably together, equalizing mechanism between said means, latching devices on said mechanism to positively interlock with said resilient means and permit release of said resilient means by movement substantially at right angles to the line of movement of said resilient means, and means for varyingthe pressure of said resilient means to vary the pressure between said rolls.
4. In a wringer of the class described wringer rolls, a plurality of horizontally mounted spring means for holding said rolls yieldably together, a plate mounted between said spring means and having latch ing devices engageable with said spring means, and a lever to move said plate transversely to the line of movement of said spring means and release said spring means to permit separation of the rolls.
5. A wringer of the class described comprising a pair of rolls normally stressed,

7. In a wringer having a pair of rolls, one movable toward and from the other, means including a plurality of longitudinally arranged springs for maintaining said rolls 1n operatlve relation, said springs having guiding abutments on their inner ends, a casing for housing and guiding said springs, and a latch on said caslng having a guideway and retaining notches for re-' ceiving said abutments.
8. In a wringer having a pair of rolls with one movably mounted relative to the other, means'including a pair of yielding elements for normally maintaining said rolls in operative relation, said elements being parallel with the rolls, a frame comprising a part of the wringer, and an equalizing device slidably supported on said frame and having guideways with spaced indentures, said elements having means engageable in said indentures and releasable therefrom by a vertical movement of said device.
9. In a wringer, a pair of rolls mounted for relative movement, yielding means for holding said rolls in yielding engagement, a frame comprising a part of the wringer,
a device slidably supported upon said frame and having guideways, and said yielding means having supporting members slidable in said guideway and adapted to be held in spaced relation therein, for tensioning said yielding means, and means for elevating said device for releasing said membersv from their spaced relation for releasing the pressure on said rolls.
