To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND J. MGNEILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Journal Jack Blocks and Wheel Clamps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention is in the nature of an improvement on the journal jack-block and wheel-clamp patented to Charles 0. Vest, June 21, 1921, No. 1,382,332.
The invention consists in a journal jackblock and wheel-clamp in which the clamp is freely movable in the direction of its length in the jack-block or base-piece and is provided with ratchet teeth adapted to engage complemental portions on the basepiece to hold the clamp in adjusted position, as I will proceed now to explain and finally claim. In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, in the several'figures of which like parts are-similarly designated, Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a partial section and elevation illustrating the invention in use. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 4 is alongitudinal section of one end of the base-piece with the wheelclamp removed. Fig. 5 is a front elevation, and Fig. 6 a side elevation of the wheelclamp detached.
As in the patent referred to, so here, 1 is a car wheel, having the ordinary or any approved rim 2. 3 is a portion of an ordinary or approved axle-box. 4 is a cross section of a track rail. 5 is any ordinary or approved lifting-jack. V
The implement of the present invention comprises a j ack-block or base-piece 6, which may be made of metal and supplied at one end with a suitable handhold 7 for handling the implement. At its opposite end this base-piece is provided with an outwardly inclined upright 8 slotted centrally at 9 and provided with the upwardly flaring grooves 10 extending from top to bottom. The horizontal portion of the base-piece is provided with a stop-lug 11, and the upper portion of the upright is provided with any suitable number of teeth 12 extending transversely across the slot 9 and offset from the grooves The wheel-clamp 13 is an inclined structure, complement'al to the inclination of the upright 8, and having the shank portion 14 adapted to fit in the slot 9 and having any suitable number of laterally projecting lugs 15 adapted to engage the grooves 10, and also having a recess 16 adapted to cooperate with the stop-lug 11 to limit the downward movement of the wheel-clamp in the upright. The face of the shank isprovided with ratchet teeth 17 complemental to'the ratchet teeth 12 of the upright and adapted to engage the latter to hold the wheel-clamp in adjusted position with relation to a wheel with which it is engaged, as indicated in Fig. 2. Not only does the present invention differ from the structure shown in the patent referred to with respect to the construction, arrangement and operation of the wheelclamp, but it also diflers in the strengthening of the upright of the base-piece by connecting its upper ends by means of the cross piece 20 on the back of which are located the teeth 12.
