To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Moses L. TRIMMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Craig, in the county of Holt and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dumping Bodies, of which the following is a specificatiom'reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in dumping bodies, and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character embodying a tail gate, and wherein novel and im roved means are employed to cause the tall gate to assume automatically an open position upon tilting of the body.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character, wherein the body will be caused to dump or tilt upon shifting of the center of gravity of the body, together with means to effect the desired shitting movement.
The ihvention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of theseveral parts of my improved dumping body whereby certain important advanta es are attained. and the device rendered s1mpler', less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a body constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in a tilting or said member 1 is-a link 2 which is also pivotally engaged with the body B at substantially the longitudinal center thereof.
The body B, at each side thereof, is proswings into dumping position, the resultant tension of said member being sutlicient to return the body B to its normal position after the load has been discharged.
Carried by and underlying the forward portion of the body B is a cross member 5, which, when the body is in its normal or horizontal position, engages beneath a catch or hook member 6 arranged at each side of the frame F and extending upwardly therefrom, whereby the body B isefi'ectively held in its normal position. It is to be understood that the shifting movement to eiiect the dumping or tilting of the bod B, is also sufiicient to release the cross member 5 from the catch or hook member 6.
Rotatably supported by the frame F at a point rearwardly of the cross member 5 is a rock shaft 7 provided with an upstanding arm 8. This arm 8 is operatively engaged with a rigid link 9 also pivotally engaged with the cross member 5. By proper rocking movement of the shaft 7 the body B will be shifted rearwardly to efiect the desired tilting or dumping movement of the body B.
The shaft 7 is also provided with a depending rock arm 10 which is pivotall engaged with a. forwardly directed r0 1 11. The rod 11 is coupled, through the medium of the turn buckle 12, or the like, with a end 15 a so pivotally connected with a bracket 16 carried by theframe F. As herein disclosed the 1ink15 is arcuate in form.

This upward movement of the arm 8 re-. sults in a rearward swinging movement of the body B sufficient to release the cross member 5 and to bring a lug 3 in contact with a member 1, whereupon the body B, by gravity, swings downwardly into dumping position as indicated in Figure 1 of the accompanying drawing.
After the body B has discharged its load, the tension of each of the retractile members 4 will cause the body B to return automatically to its horizontal position and move rearwardly sufficient to cause the cross member 5 to have locking engagement with each of the catches or book members 6. During this movement, the lever 17 will swing upwardly and rearwardly and the upper end portion of the arm 18 will be operatively engaged with the holding dog 20. This dog 20 is provided with a tail extension 21. to facilitate its release from the arm 18 when it is desired to effect a tilting of the body B.
The rear portion of the body B has amo: ci'ated therewith a drop tail gate G which assumes a closedposition when. the body B is in its normal or horizontal position.' When the body is tilted the gate G is caused automatically to move to open position.
In the present embodiment of my invention, this automatic opening movement of the gate G is effected by a mechanism comprising a shaft 22 supported by and extending transversely ofthe body B and extend mg beyond the opposite sides thereof. Each end portion of the shaft 22 is provided withan upwardly directed arm 23 which has pivotall engaged therewith a link 24, said link 24 being also pivotally engaged with a side portion of the gate G.
.The shaft 22, adjacent each end, is also provided with a depending arm 25 with which is pivotally engaged a link 26 also pivotally engaged with a member 1, the pivotal connection of the link 26 with the body being common to the pivotal connection between said body and a link 2.
When the body B is initially shifted rearwardly, the links 26, through the instrumentality of the arms 25, will effect a rocking movement of "the shaft 22, sufiicient t'ocause the arms 23 to swing the arms 24 outwardly sufficient to swin the gate G into open position. As the body B tilts, the gate G will be free to further move into open position. When the body B is returned to its normal position, the mechanism just described will cause the gate Gr automatically to operate to its closed position.
From the foregoing description it is though to be obvious that a dumping body constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by 1 reason of' the convenience and facility wit which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not Wish to be understood aslimiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
What is claimed is I. In combination with a frame, a body mounted thereon for slidin movement a link pivotally connected witii the body and the frame, means to impart tiltin move ment to the body upon shifting of t e body in one direction, a tail gate for the body, a rock shaft carried by the body and .provided with a rock arm, a link pivotally engaged with the rock arm and with the frame, the pivotal connection between said last named link and frame being common to the pivotal connection between the first named link and the frame, and an operative connection between the rock arm and gate to cause said gate to move into open position upon shiftin of the body in one direction. 2. In combination with a frame, a body mounted thereon for sliding movement, a link pivotally connected with the body and the frame, means to impart tilting movement to the body upon shifting of the body in one direction, a tail gate for the body, a rock shaft carried by the body and provided with a rock arm,'a link pivotally engaged with the rock arm and with the frame, the pivotal connection between said last named link and frame being common to the pivotal rotation of the rock shaft in onedire'ction, a rock arm carried by said shaft, an arm supported by the frame for swinging movement, a link having one end portion pivotally supported by the frame, a rod pivotally engaged with the opposite end portion of the link and ivotally aged with the rock arm of th shaft, $1? a second link pivotally engaged with the arm and with the link at a point. between the pivotal connections of said first link with the frame and with the rod.
4. In combination with a frame, a body mounted thereon for slidingmovement, a rock shaft carried by the frame, an operative connection between the rock shaft and body to impart sliding movement to the body and to cause tilting movement of said body upon rotation of the rock shaft in one direction, a rock arm carried by said shaft, an arm supported by the frame for swinging movement, a link having one end-portion pivotally supported by the frame, a rod pivotally engaged with the o posite end portion of the link and pivota ly engaged with the rock arm of the shaft, a second link pivotally engaged with the arm and with the link at a point between the pivotal connections of said first link with the frame and with the rod, and a pedal for imparting swinging movement to the arm.

In combination with a frame, a body mounted thereon for sliding movement, a rock shaft carried by the frame, an operative connection between the rock shaft and body to impart sliding movement to the body and to cause tilting movement of said body upon rotation of the rock shaft in one direction, a' rock arm carried by said shaft, an arm supported by the frame for swing ing movement, a link having one end portion pivotally sup orted by the frame, a rod pivotally engage with the o posite end portion of the link and ivota ly engaged with the rock arm of the s aft, a secon link pivotally engaged with the arm and with the link at a point between the pivotal connections of said first link with the'frame and with the rod, and a holding dog engageable with the arm when the body is in one position to lock the body against sliding, and swinging movement, said dog automatically engaging the arm upon movement of the body to its normal osition.
