Description

Fatented Dec. 25, l:
LAMB
UNEE FFEEE.
CHARLES I. HOOPES, FRANCIS 1?. HOOPES, AND JVILLARD'S. STEELE, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
SPARK PLUG.
Application filed April 8, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES P. Hoorns, FRANCIS P. Hoorns, and WVILLARD S. STEELE, citizens of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spark Plugs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in spark plugs.
The primary object of our invention is to provide a spark plug having a special form of inner or central electrode which is adapted to be heated to an intense degree and burn any oil that would otherwise accumulate and interfere with the ignition. A spark plug embodying our improvement is highly efficient in Fords and other en" gines that have a tendency to pump oil and foul the plugs.
With the foregoing and other objects in view that will appear as the nature of our invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel features of construe 25 tion, combination and arrangement of parts illustrated in the drawing and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim. In the accompanying drawing, which is for illustrative purposes only and is there fore not drawn to scale Figure 1 is an elevation of a spark plug embodying our improvements.
Figure 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of F igure 1.
Figure 3 is an inner end view.
Figure 4 is a detail perspective view of the inner or central electrode, and
Figure 5 is a horizontal section, taken on line 5-5 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings for a more particular description of our invention, and in which drawings like parts are designated by like reference characters throughout the several views, the numeral 1 represents the outer metal shell or casing which screws into the top of the engine casing and is provided with the usual sparking point or terminal 2. The numeral 3 represents the inner or central electrode which is carried by the cylindrical insulator at held in position in the outer shell or casing 1 by the tubular nut 5. Suitable packing, as 6, may be interposed between the inner end of the nut Serial No. 550,609.
5 and the enlarged portion 7 of the insulator to provide a water tight joint at this point. The outer end of the inner or cen tral electrode 3 projects above the insulator i and is exteriorly threaded, as at 8, to receive the nut and washer 9 and 10, respectively, between which is clamped one end. of the circuit wire (not shown) which leads to the battery, generator or other source of electrical energy. The lower end of the central electrode 3 is formed with a flat circular collar or shoulder 11 which fits against the inner wall of a vertical cylindrical cent-rally disposed recess 12 formed in the inner end of the insulator 4.
In carryin g out our invention, the inner terfere with proper ignition.
For this reason, it has been found that a spark plug equipped with our improved design of in ner or central electrode is highly eflicient in Fords and other engines that have a tendency to pump oil and foul the plugs.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawing, it is thought that the construction operation and advantages of our invention will be readily un derstood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Having described our invention, what we claim as new Patent, 1s
and desire to secure by Letters A spark plug electrode which is Y-shapcd in transverse flanges some section thereby having branch of which are disposed at an acute angle to each other and others at obtuse angles to each other whereby acute angle surfaces or obtuse angle surfaces may be presented 1.! to the spare: gap.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures.
CHARLES P. HOOPES. FRANCES P. HOOPES. WILLARD S. STEELE.
