SPOT TRIMMING FOR DRESSES.
Application filed February 18, 1922.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, EDWARD CULOTTA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond Hill, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spot Trimmings for Dresses, of which the following is a full, clear and exact specification.
This invention relates to'trimmings for ladies dresses, and has for its object to provide an improved and cheaper form of spot trimming.
Metallic spots are extensively used for trimming, and as heretofore made said spots consist of dome shaped metal heads or spots having spurs for fastening them to dress goods. The present invention contemplates making the heads or spots of celluloid or other suitable plastic material or substance, and mounting them on metallic backing plates having spurs for connecting to the dress goods. The backing plates also have spurs for fastening the celluloid or other heads permanently thereto.
The invention will be first hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawings, which constitute part of this specification, and then more specifically defined in the claims at the end of the description.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views 2- Figure 1 is a plan view of a backing plate blank such as may be used in the manufacture of my improved spot trimming.
Figure 2 is an edge view of the same.
Figure 3 is a sectional view of the back-- ing plate with its two sets of spurs bent into position for attaching to the head and dress goods, respectively.
Figure 4 is a similar section of the completed spot trimming having the celluloid or plastic head molded thereon.
Figure 5 is a side view of the spot trimming.
Figure 6 is a sectional view of a backing plate of modified form. and the head attached thereto. the attaching position of the spurs to engage the dress goods being indicated in dotted lines.
Serial No. 537,613.
Figure 7 is a plan view of a backing plate blank of modified form, and v Figure 8 is an elevation of one of the completed spots attached to a piece of dress goods, the latter being shown in section.
Referringfirst to Figures 1 to 4:, inclusive, the metallic backing plate 1 is preferably made round with crossing slits 2 at the center for forming the upstanding spurs 4- of Figures 3 and 4. The blank also has spurs 3 projecting from the periphery of the circular plate 1, said spurs being bent down, as in Figures 3 and 4, for attachment to the dress goods 10 in Figure 8 by clinch ing. The dome shaped head 5 of celluloid or other suitable plastic material is molded on the backing plate when warm and pli able, and when it hardens the spurs l are imbedded therein so as to permanently fasten said head to said backing plate.
As illustrated in Figure 6, the circular backing plate 1 may be made arched or convex, as at 6, in order to save celluloid, it being obvious that less celluloid is required to fill out the head 5 when the backing plate is thus arched than when said plate is fiat, as in Figure 4.
Figure 7 shows a further modification in which the slits in the backing plate 1 are arranged in the form of an X. as at 7. In this instance only two spurs 8 may be bent up for engaging the plastic head, if desired. It will be noted that by making the head of celluloid or other suitable plastic sub stance, the spots may be manufactured much more cheaply than when the entire spots are made of metal, as heretofore, and that the use of the plastic material permits of a wide range of colors being used. The plastic material may be colored before being molded on the backing plates, or coated with the desired colors afterwards, if desired.
I claim 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a backing plate having depending spurs for attaching to dress goods, and upstanding spurs spaced from ltS edge, of a plastic head conforming to said plate and in which said upstanding spurs are embedded.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a backing plate of circular form having spurs extending from its periphery for engaging material to which the device is to be attached, of a head fitting over said plate and of the same size, and spursprojiecting from thebod'y portion "of said plate to and embedded in said head.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with abacking plate-having depending spurs for attaching the same to dress goods, of a head overlying and conforming to the edges fsaid plate, and upstanding spurs on said plate embedded in saidheadi i Ina device of the character described, the combination With abacking'plate of QQnveX form, of a headfitting over sai'dconvex plate, spurs extending upwardly from convexpp late andv embedded in said ,head, and means for attaching said plate to; re s. goods? 5. In a device or" the character described, the combination with a backingplate of convex form, of a head of plastic material fitting oversaid plate, spursextending up tvardlygfromflthe central portion of said cony exf'plateand embedded inlsaid head, and "means for attaching said plate to dress aqe'e a 6. In a device of the character described, the combination With a backing plate of convex form, of a head fitting over said plate, spurs" extending upwardly from the central portion of said p'late'and embedded in said head, and other spurs on the edges of'saidplate'iOr attaching the device to dress goods.
7.111 a device of the character described, the combination with a backing plate having crossed slits in itscentral portion and the material between said slits bent upward to "form upstanding spurs, of a head fitting over said plate and having said spurs embedded therein.
8. In a device of the character described,
the combination with a backing plate ham ting crossed sllts in its central portion and the material between said slit-s bent upward to form upstanding spursfof a head fitting over said plate and having said spurs/embedded'therein, and depending spurs on the edges of said ,plate for attaching the device to dress goods.
In testimony hereof I have signed my name to this specification. 1
