Be it known that l, Janine J.
a citizen of the United States, residing New vforli oity New Yoria have invente certain new and useful lmprov'emeni Journal Lubricators, oit which the f llo,.A ing is a lull, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in 'the art to which it appertains to malte and u the same, reference being had to the accom aany ing` drawings, forming part ot this speciiication.
My invention relates to journal lubricators such as are used in railway rolling stock) and consists in an improved lubricant reservoir and pump construction adaptedto be applied to journal boxes and to be operated by the relative movement between tbe axle journal and the journal box.
One of the objects or my invention is to provide a lubricator which may be assembled with a standard `journal box without necessitating any worlr on the latter.
An additional object is to utilize the bottom of the journal box for a wall oit the lubricant reservoir, thereby reducing the amount of material required for the lubricator accessory.
An additional object is to provide a lubri- -cator which may be applied to and removed from the journal box while the axlel journal is assembled therewith.
A still further object is to so construct my lubricator that the journal box may be jacked up while mounted on the journal to permit replacement of the brasses and wedges.
ln the accompanying drawings. which` illustrate a selected embodiment of my invention,
Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section through the lower portion of a journal box with my lubricator applied and showing the axle journal assembled therewith.
Figure 2 is a transverse vertical section on line 2-2 of Figure l.
Figure 3 is a detail horizontal section ou line 3 3 of Figure l.
Figures 4 and 5 are similar to Figures l and 2 which show a modiication or my invention.
rEhe lubricator body l consists preferably of a casting adapted to rest upon the bottom of the journal box 2 and to extend upwardly toward the opening in the journal box and engage the inside wall of the latter Serial No. 501,869.
I to its openi i oer el is secured to not" i s d from the bottom of and extends oativanJ he side walls of the jourr" ,not between member anc. wall may be made oil-tight bj. merne ot p. c ing 5 or by a resilient pressure on the wall 2:'
indicated at The space between body i,
members fr, and the bottor journal box forms the lubricant reservoir. lntegral with body l is the pump cyl i der 7) open to the lubricant reservoir, disposed horizontally and provided with pump plunger 8 having a curved :nsion 9 on its outer end. e lever l0 pivote the body l. enga t 9, and projects be) ond body i. to a approximately opposite the axis ot 7 assembled with the box. An ele pivoted to the outer end of lever is adapted to engage center hole 152 in the journal and to transmit shitting moveli) and ment or' the journal in one direction tlirouifi 80 lever l() and extension 9 to )lunemx Movement or plunger 8 in trie opp rection is provided by a spring pressed between shoulder at tl'ic o" cr end of cylinder 7 and an opposing shoulder 85 on the plunger.
rlhe pivoting of element ll on lever l() permits relative vertical move ent oitl the journal and the journal box w. ut effecting the lubricator. j l prefer to m e element llso that in emergency it will yield to tlm. shifting movement ol the journal to prevu, injury to the pump mechanism. A'
The intake to cylinder ).7 is provided with a suitable check valve leland the discharge from cylinder Z is through a passage in upwardly extending lug l5 which is provided with a check valve lo, Telescopically mounted in lug l5 is bushing 17 adapted to bear against the bottoni of the journal irrespective of the vertical position of the latter. A spring 18 compressed between the valves 16 and suitable tongues on bushing 17 serves at once to press both bushing and valve to their desired positions.
lt will be noted that the lubricator has no bottom and cooperates with the bottom of the journal box to form the lubricant reservoir. This construction provides a comparatively shallow lubricator which permits the journal box to be jacked up in the usual manner when it is journal brass ll-Jhen this operation is performed, the supporti-ng portion i? of the body l land the top or lug l5 engage the bottom of the journal box and the axle journal, respectively, to li` it. the movement or the journal and box toward each other and prevent injury to the lubricator.
lil/vaste may be packed over the top ofi the lubricator in the usual manner and the construction is such that the car maybe reversed on a dumping machine without loss of oil, which is an advantage not present in many types oit lubricators.
ln the modilication 'shown inliigures 4: and 5, the pump cylinder 19 and housing 20 is lormed integral with the journal box and the pump plunger 2l, is operated by means el a rock and gears and 2a. The latter are journaled in housing 20 and are driven alternately in opposite directions by a segment gear forming one end of a lever 26 which is fulcrumed in the upper end of l'iousing` and is reciprocated by the contact or elementv 2i' with the eno or the axle journal. rlhe upper lace of housing 2O is slotted at 2,9 to permit the insertion of gears 23 and 2li and of the segment gear 25. A waste holder 28 is mounted on the journal boX and on housing 20 similarly to the Waste holder 4 shown in the preferred construction. A
rlhe principle oic operation of this mod-ilication is the same as that of the preferred construction and the essential features of Vthe latter are retained.
@ther changes in the construction of my device may be made, Without departing from the spirit ol the invention, as set 'forth in the following claims.
l claim:
l. ln combination, a railway axle journal, a standard journal box carried thereby, a member cooperating with thebottom of said box to form a closed lubricant reservoir, a
`telescoping passage leading from the reservoir formed to said journal and adapted `to accommodate variations in the vertical position out said journal, and a pump operated :learner by relative `'nerirental movement or said boi; and journal '(ior feeding lubricant Uhrough ,said passage.
2. in a lubricator, a body member adapted to be positioned on the bottom or' a. standard railway journal box to form a lubricant reservoir', a downwardly extending support on said member, an `upvrardly extending lug on said member adapted to limit upward movement, relative to a journal, or said body. and a journal bor; assembled therewith, a bushing telescopieally mounted in said lug, and lubricant passage from said reservoir to said lug and bush-ing'.
3. ln a journal lubrioator,a lubricant reservoir, a pump cylinder 4open thereto, a pump plunger reeiprocally mounted in said cylinder and extendingoutwardly therefrom into saidreservoir, a spring compressed between the end or saidlcylinder and the outwardly extending` portion of said plunger, and a member extending outside off said reservoir and adapted to be operated by movement of a journal relative fto Vthe reservoirk forjoperating said plu-nger to compress said spring. l
4i. In a journal box, `a lubricant reservoir, a pumping mechanism, anda rigid element adapted to be supported upon the bottom of a journal box and 4extending above said reservoir, whereby 'when fthe journal box vis jacked up relatiif'etoa journal with .Which `it is assembled, said element will engage the journal and prevent injury to said Ireservoir `and pumping mechanism.
5. ln a journal lubricator, a `luliricant reservoir, a pump cylinder, a discharge :passage therefrom, a check valve in :said passage, a telescoping` extension oi said @passage adapted to contact With-the` suriaceiof a journal to be lubricated, and aspring compressed between said check valve and extension to press the valve toward its seat and the eir- 'tension toward its-projected position.
ln testimony whereof l hereunto aizr my signature this 29th day of J une, 1921.
.mums J. ynieu-imssr.
