SAUSAGE STUFFEB.
Application filed May 27, 1922. Serial No. 564,039.
To all whom it may concern: there-with by means of the screw 6 and then I Be it known that I, EDWARD F. DEAooN, aturning the clamp 7 on the pivot 8 and it is citizen or" the United States of America, reto means preventing this pivotal movement siding at the city of St. Louis, State of Misof the clamp 7 to remove the head from the souri, United States of America, have inalignment with the end of the cylinder that 60 vented a certain new and useful. Sausage my invention relates, the object of the in- Stufier, or" which the following is such a vention being, as above indicated, to prefull, clear, and exact description as will vent this shifting of the head when the valve enable any one skilled in the art to which it controlling the admission of air to the rear 10 appertains to make and use the same, referof the piston is open and to prevent the open- 65 ence being bad to the accompanying drawing of the valve while the cylinder head is ings, forming part of this specification. out of alignment with the end of the My invention relates to compressing niacylinder. chines and particularly to sausage stufling A supply pipe 11 from a suitable air commachines of thetype wherein an air actuated prcssor, not shown, is connected to the 70 piston forces sausage or other comminuted supply pipe 3 through the valve 12 and conproducts into edible casings in which they nected to the moving part of this valve is a are sold and the object of the invention is latch member 13 pivoted to an extension of to provide safety means whereby the piston the cylinder wall at 14, the connection bemay not be accidentally blown out of the tween the valve and latch member compris- 75 cylinder of the machine when the head is ing a slot in the latch, and a pin 15 attached removed for cleaning purposes. These mato the valve as shown. In the open position chines are usually large with very heavy of the valve, the end of the latch 13 extends pistons and accidental forcing of the piston in the path of motion of the head of the bolt out of the cylinder may result in injury to 9 in the clamping yoke 7 and therefore pre- 80 workmen and considerable property damage. vents the pivotal movement of this clamp In the accompanying drawings which which is necessary to remove the cylinder illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a side head from alignmentwith the cylinder. The view of a sausage stuffing machine to which relative position of the parts when the valve the invention is applied; Figure 2 is-a veris open is shown in Figures 4t and 6. 85 tical cross sectional view"; Figure 3 is a top When the cylinder head is in position on plan view; and Figures 4, 5, and 6 are detail the cylinder, and as shown in Figure 4, the views showing the operating valve and head. of the bolt 9 engages with a sliding valve locking mechanism to which my inlatch locking member 16 which member carvention relates. ries the latch locking pin 17. When the yoke 90 1 represents the cylinder of the machine is swung to open position and 9 is brought and 2 the piston, loosely mounted therein, out of engagement with 16 .the spring 18 which is actuated by compressed air received raises 16 and brings the pin 17 into position through pipe 3 to force the piston up in the where it may enter the slot 19 in the latch cylinder and expel the contents of the cylmember 13, this slot having been brought 95 inder through the openings 4 into the con to a vertical position by the closing of the air taining casings, not shown. The head 5 of valve which necessarily preceded the sw ngthe cylinder is adapted to be removed for the ing of the yoke 7 out of its closed posltion. purport of filling the cylinder and of clean- The conformation of this slot 19 with relaing it, this head being connected by means tion to the pin 17 is such that the valve can- 100 of the threaded member 6 to the clamping not be opened until the pin is removed from yoke 7. One end of this clamping yoke is the slot which action does not take place, of held in pivoted relation with the cylinder course, until the tapered end of the bolt 9 by means of the bolt 8 and the other end is engages with the tapered end of the member held in engagement with the cylinder by the 16 when the yoke is brought to closed po- 105 bolt 9 which in the closed position of the sition. head lies in the laterally opening groove 10 In the drawings, the numeral 20 indicates in an integral lateral extension of the cyl-' the air vent pipe for releasing the air pres; inder wall. The head is removed from the sure in the cylinder when the valve is closed cylinder by lifting it out at engagement and 21 indicates abypass valve of relatively 11c small opening through which air may be admitted for the purpose of raising the pieton to the top of the cylinder when it is desired to remove the piston therefrom. then said piston is brought to the top of the cylinder it is connected to the pivoted arm 23 by means. of the bolt 22. M of rack and pin connection with the handle 24, may be elevated and the piston brought to position to be swung to one side and access can thus be had to all parts of the piston and interior of the cylinder for cleaning purposes.
The operation of my improved. safety means will be apparent from the 'loregoing description, and it will be noted accidental forcing of the piston out of the cylinder whilethe head is oil or the release of the head clamping yoke while the valve is open are automatically prevented.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a compression cylinder having a removable head, a liquid actuated piston in the cylinder, a valve controlling admission 01. liquid to the cylinder, and means connected to the valve for looking it in closed position, said means being positioned to prevent removal of the cylinder head when the valve is inopen position.
2. In a device of the class described, .the combination with a compression cylinder having a removable head, a liquid actuated piston in the cylinder, a valve controlling admission of liquid to the cylinder, a pivoted support for the removable head, and means connectedto the valve for looking it in closed position, said means being posi tioned to prevent the swinging of the head support on its pivot when the valve is in open position.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a compression cylinder having a removable head, a liquid actuated piston in the cylinder, a valve controlling admission of liquid to the cylinder, means This arm, by means connected to the valve for locking it in closed position, said means comprising a locking member tending to move to locking position, and means operative only when the removable cylinder head. is in alignment with the cylinder for holding said first mentioned means in unlocking position.
In a device of the class described, the combination with a compression cylinder having a removable head, a liquid actuated piston in the cylinder, a valve controlling admission of liquid to the cylinder, locking means connected to the valve and a locking; pin for engaging said locking means when the valve is in closed position, the position of said locking pin being controlled by the position of the removable head.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination with a compression cylinder having a removable head, a liquid actuated piston in thecylinder, a valve controlling admission of liquid to the cylinder, a clamp ing yoke attached to the removable head and pivoted at one end, a clamping member car ried by the other end of the yoke and engaging the cylinder when the head in position thereon, a locking latch connected to the valve and extending in the path of said clamping member when the valve is open.
6. In a device of the class described, the combination with a compression cylinder having a removable head,a liquid actuated piston in .the cylinder, a valve controlling admission of liquid to the cylinder, a clamping yoke attached to the removable head and pivoted at one end, ,a clamping member carried by the other end. oi the yoke and engaging the cylinder when the head is in position thereon, a locking latch connected to the valve and extending in the path of said clamping member when the valve is open, a locking pin to engage said latch when the valve is closed. said locking pin being actuated by the clampingmember carried by the yoke. I
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed myseal.
EDWARD BEACON. [Ls]
