Specification of Letters Eatent; Patented July 15, 1919.
Application filed September 24, 1918. Serial No. 255,460.
I To all whom it may concern Be it known that I VAoLAv MIKULECKY, a' citizen of the United States, residing at Verdigre, in the county of Knox and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Tongues, of which the following is a specification.
- This invention relates particularly to tongue hounds for wagons of the kind which are removably connected with the fore hounds of the wagon. and which are adjustable in such manner that they may be fitted to wagons of different kinds and sizesin which the fore hounds are of different and are differently shaped. j
The object of my invention is to provide improved means for obtaining the desired adjustments.
In carrying outmy invention I provide the tongue with a pair of tongue hounds which are set at an angle to the tongue as is usual and which are connected at their a rear ends to the rear end of the tongue by links, the outer ends of which are pivotally connected. with the hounds and the inner ends of which are pivotally connected with a yoke, which is longitudinallyadjustable on the tongue. The front ends of the hounds are connected to the tongue by links which are pivotally connected with the hounds and adjustably connected with thetongue. The front ends of the tongue hounds are also connected with the tongue by means of brackets which are rigidly secured to the tongue and are slotted at their outer ends to receive pivot bolts which connect said. bracketsto the hounds. By means of the slots in the brackets adjustable connection is provided between the brackets and the hounds. In this way the tongue hounds may be given all the necessary adjustments to fit wagon hounds and may be adjusted to wagon hounds of various kinds and sizes.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of adjustable tongue hounds embodying my improvements.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 shows a section on the line 33 of i 1.
Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the hounds shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 shows a transverse section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
nal y a o g the center of F gsizes Fig. 7 is a perspective view showing the adjustable connection between the front end of one of the hounds and the tongue.
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of one of the brackets which connects the front end of one of the hounds to the tongue.
Fig. 9 is a perspective view of one of the links which connect the front end of the hounds to the tongue. i
A indicates the tongue and B the tongue hounds. Each tongue hound has secured to it a strap 6 which extends along the outer side of the hound, is bent around the rear end thereof as indicated at b and is provided on the inner side of the hound with a loop 5 At its front end the strap extends around the front end of the hound and is formed with a forwardly extending loop 6 The strap is secured in place by suitable fastening devices 6 i 1 At its rear end the tongue is connected to the rear end of each hound by two links C (Fig. 3). Theouter ends of these links are pivotally connected with each hound by a bolt 0 extending through a loop 6 and through suitable holes in the links. The inner ends of each pair of links is pivotally connected with the tongue by means of a yokeD, and a U-shaped bar E. A plate F extends along the upper side of the rear portionof the tongue and is fastened thereto in any suitable way. This plate is slotted at 7" as indicatedin Fig. 1. The yoke D extends over the rear. slotted portion of the plate and it is also slotted as indicated at d. A bolt G extends through the slotted plate and yoke and this bolt may be passed through any one of the holes a in the tongue and through the slots d and f. In this way yoke D may be adjustably connected with the tongue longitudinally thereof. The U- shaped bar E extends under the tongue and its upper outer-ends extend through openings in the inner ends of the links C and through the outer ends of the yoke D. 0 indicates washers interposed between the yoke and the lower links 0. 0 indicate nuts onthe threaded portions of the U-shaped rod. In this way the rear ends of the hounds are connected with the rear portion of the tongue in such manner that the hounds may be spread apart or drawn closer together to the desired extent.
A saddle G is supported on the tongue in advance of the front ends of the hounds, a th #0 1 and 0f h plate F is bent upward to receive the rear end of the saddle and the rear end of the leat H.
' and are bent at is as indicated to form flat portions 70 which are pivotally connected with the loops 6 by bolts L as indicated most clearly in Fig. 5. The outer rear ends of the brackets K are slotted as indicated at 70 whereby an adjustable connection is afforded between the tongue and the front ends of the hounds. The brackets K are bolted to the saddle Gr" as indicated at g. In this way the brackets are held rigidly in place. The front ends of the hounds are also connected with the tongue by links M which are pivotally connected to the front ends of the hounds by the bolts L as indicated in Figs. 4 and 5. These links are not slotted at their outer ends vbut are merely pivoted to the front ends of the hounds. At their inner ends the links are slotted as indicated at m and they overlap each other and the bolt 7L extends through said slots. Furthermore, the inner ends of the links M are corrugated as indicated at m to prevent them from slipping when they are adjusted and clamped by the nuts h and washer k on the lower end of the bolt h. Bythis construction the front ends of the hounds may be given the desired adjustments. By loosening the bolts h the links M may be spread apart or overlapped to a greater or less eX-.
tent and when the nuts h are tightened the links will be held securely in place on the tongue. The brackets K serve to support the front ends of the hounds but inasmuch as they are slotted as, indicated at 70 they permit the front endsof the hounds to be moved closer to or farther away from the tongue. l/Vhen the front ends of the hounds K indicates brackets which are secured at 70 tothe sides of thetongue are adjusted the rear ends are permitted to assume proper adjustments by reason of the link connections before described. The nuts ctmay be loosened or tightened when required. It will thus be seen that the tongue hounds may be adjusted to a considerable extent so as to adapt them to wagon hounds of various kinds and sizes.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination with a wagon tongue of tongue hounds, means for adjustably connecting the front ends of said hounds to the tongue, said means comprising upper bracket members and lower linkmembers, said link members having a laterally adjustable connection to the tongue, and said bracket members having adjustable connections to the hounds.
2. The combination with a wagon tongue of tongue hounds, means for adj ustably connecting the front ends of said hounds to the tongue, said means comprising lower link members and upper bracket members, said link members being provided with slotted inner ends whereby they may be adjustably secured to the tongue, and said bracket members having slotted outer ends whereby they may be adjustably securedto the front ends of the hounds.
3. The combination with a wagon tongue of tongue hounds, links pivotally connected with the rear ends of the hounds and with the rear portion of the tongue, rigid brackets extending laterally from said tongue and to which the front ends of the hounds are adjustably connected, and links connected to the front ends of the hounds and having a laterally adjustable connection with the tongue.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name.
VACLAV MIKULncnY';
