Its objects are, first, to provlde a' mechanism in which eachkey controls two sepa rate type characters through selectiveoperating devices.
Second, to arrange the machine so as to provide for the application of power to hand manipulation.
Third, to provide means whereby. difiercnt sizes or styles of type fontscan be used in the same structure.
Fourth, to provide a mechanism capableof being actuated up to the full speed limit of the operator.

The invention, more specifically described, comprises acylindrieal magazine having a plurality of T shaped slots'21 in its pe- 20' 'toa certain character; allofthe type face outwardly, fiat side down, the lower-most riphery corresponding to the number of characters it is desired to use; in theslots, which arearranged radially, are columns of type 22, each slot being appropriated resting directly on a smooth, flat bed 23 disposed an'nularly below the magazine 20 which it supports through the ring 26 on which isthe rim 37 of the lower magazine spider, 38 a similar spider being at the top "of themagazine- V The ring 26 has an inwardly extending rib 27 formed with an open groove 28 at the upperrside through which are a series of cuts so made as to form individual brackets or supports30for the bell-cranks 31 which have short pivot 32 resting in the groove and maintained therein by a cover-plate 33;

A traveler 42, mounted concentric to th I "flat annular base 23, and provided with a end of the slots in such manner as to permit ridge 43 adapted to engage with a groove formed laterally across the upper surface of the type, is removably connected with a ring 47 surrounding the base 25 by means of slotted openings fitting studs 45, the heads of which may'pass freely through enlargements formed opposite to the driving the traveler to be removed when desired.
The ring 47 has a circumferential groove near its lower edge formmg a race-way for able that the ball races are so formed as to permit the ring 47 to revolve and also that the balls lock the ring to the lower member against any other movement.
Another groove is also formed around the ring 17 toreceive the belt 51 which conveys rotary motion to it from the motor 52, the belt running from the pulley 53 over the idlers 55 and 56 mounted on brackets at the rear of the machine.
The vertically movable annulus 50 is engaged with the base 23 by means of balls 60 set partially in indentations formed in the inner side of the annulus and partially in vertical elongated slots 61 formed in the periphery of the base at intervals around its circumference in such manner that the annulus is free to move up or down a limited distance with relation to the base, but cannot revolve about it.
A number of pins 62, preferably three, set in the exterior of the annulus, at equidistant points are engaged with links 63 extending from the levers 6a secured on the shafts 65 turning in brackets 66 and 67.
These shafts are connected, as at 68, to work in unison and have upon them other levers 69 extending outwardly and connect ing with vertical links 70 attached at their lower ends to horizontal levers-71 fulcrumed at their outer ends, their opposite ends being adapted to engage with the vertical hook lever 72 pivotally mounted on levers 73 operated by all the character keys through a universal bar 75; the lower ends of the hook lever are beveled or cam shaped to engage with a fixed pin 76 in such manner asto disengagezthe hook end when the key levers havev been depressed a definite distance.
From the foregoing it will be seen that whenever a character or space key is depressed that the traveler 42 is caused to be raised sufficiently to allow a type to be projected into its path by an ejector whereupon the traveler is instantly lowered so that the ridge i3 engages with the groove in the upper surface of the type.
In register with the ridge 3 are a series of vertically mounted pins 78 extending through the traveler and contained in housings 79 secured on its upper surface, the pin being pressed downwardly by the compression spring 80 in such. manner that its rounded point is adapted to make contact against one'of the grooves formed in the edges of the type, causing it to advance in a circular path.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent is 1. In a type setting machine, a series of upright type supply channels, a type race at the lower ends of said channels comprising a rotary type-pushing member, and an ejector for each channel adapted to discharge type therefrom to the race, in combination with a set of key levers less in number than thejejectors, operating connections from each lever comprising a part adapted for alternate connection with two ejectors and a shift key for selectingthe connection made by said part. V

In a type setting machine having gravity type-supply channels, a type-race comprising a, rotary type-pushing member and ejectors for each channel, the combination of two of said ejectors, a single key for actuating either of them, a shift catch forming part of the lineof operating connections between said key and, each ejector, and a shift key for swinging said catch from connection'withnone ejector or the other.

In a type setting machine of the kind described, having. gravity type-supply channels, a type race with 'a rotary type .pushing member andra series of key levers less than the supply channels, the combination of ejectors' for each channel, a shift catch carried by each key lever and a shift key for shifting said catch into operating connection with either of two of said ejectors.

In a type setting machine having a circular. set of gravity supply channels and ejectors therefor, the combination of a set of key levers, less in number than the supply channels, with means combined with said levers whereby either of two substantially diametrically disposed ej' ectors may be operated thereby. 1
