' HINGE-@VER Box.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, `CHARLES II. NoWAoK, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hunary, residing in Chicago, in the county of ook and State of Illinois, have invented a in Hinge- Cover Boxes,- of' which the following is a specification. 1
This invention relates in `general to hinge cover boxes and has more particular reference to cracker boxes and the like.
A principal objectof this invention is the provision of a hinge for a box or container for packaging crackers or other material, which will permit of the permanent securing of the v.part of the hinge connection to the body of the box without the use of solderv and after the box is completely formed.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a hinge connection of unusual strength, of durablityequal to the durability of the remainder of the box construction, and which will not reduire expensive machinery to construct or assemble.
A further object of the invention is the provisionjof such a hinge which will not mar the outside'appearance of the box. Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description When considered in connection with the a'ccompanying drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof.
On the drawing,
Figure 1 is a perspective, view of a box embodying my invention; Y
Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectionof the same;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged section taken substantially on-the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. l 'is an enlarged perspective vview of the strip for forming the part of a hinge connection, which is securedto the body.v
For thel purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown on the drawing a cracker box of well known type and appearance and which will not need Aparticular detailed description. It may, however, be mentioned that the box is constructed in the present instance offmetallicsheet material, the upper edges 11 of the walls 12 being bent about and embracing a suitable reinforce 13. The coverindicated at 14 is of usual type adapted to close down over the ycody and embraces at its lower edge a wire Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 1115i 26 192.1, Application led March 29, 1917.Q Serial No. 158,155.
'or rod lfwhich is continuous about the embracing flangel which closes down-over the body. The embracing iange 16 is cut away at two points at the rear to expose the wire or rod and permit the location of hinge connections to pivotally secure the* cover to the body." Since the two hinge connections between the cover and box or body are -duplicates of each other in the present instance, a description of 4one of them will be suficient for the two.
A strip of metal embraces the rod or wire 18 at one of the exposed locations mentioned and this strip is provided with a central loop "17 through the aperture 18 yof which the wire or rod is placed. The strip ispbentcompletely around this rod or wire into substantial contact at 19 and outwardly from the loop a substantial distance is bent back upon itself at 20, the length of the stripJ being such that the extreme ends 21 are thus brought past the central part of the strip which embraces the wire. Just inwardly of this part they are bent out at 22. The loops 20 are inserted through a suitably ,positioned aperture 23 in the rear of the box body and are then separated and bent at the points 34 into parallelism with the bent extreme ends 21 so that each of these extreme ends and its companion loop forms a channel into which the material above and below the aperture. engages. rIhe member of the hinge connection which is fixed to the body is thus locked in place through the interlocking engagement of the strip and box body. The connection thus formed is of considerable strength since the material of the body is clamped individually at each end of the hinged strip reinforcing'the material about the aperture through engagement with the side walls.y
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the [parts without departing from the spirit and vscope of the invention or lsacrificing any lof its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferredv embodiment thereof.
I claim:
l. A box constructed of sheet material, a cover therefor, and a hinge connection between said cover and box, a part of said connection fixed to the box comprising a strip of material pivotally connected to the cover and having its ends extending through an aperture into said box, said strip being bent to provide shoulders of two thicknesses of said strip engaging the inner faces of said box at lsaid aperture.
'2. A box, a cover therefor, and a hinge connection between said cover and said box, a part of said connection fixed with respect to the box comprising a strip of metal formed with a loop pivotally connected to the cover and having its ends disposed through an aperture in the box and each end bent to lock the body of the box at the aperture with said end, said ends being held between lthe box and said loop.
3. A box, a cover therefor, anda hinge connection between said cover and said box, said connection comprising -a pintle carried yby the cover, and a strip of sheet material embracing said pintle and extending into the box, said strip being folded to form two thicknesses of said material and so as to cause its outer and inner portions to engage both the outside and inside of the box respectively to secure the strip to the box.
4. A box, a cover therefor, and a hinge connection between said cover and said box, said connection comprising a pintle carried by the cover, and a strip of material embracing the pintle and having itsl ends two thicknesses of.v said strip,
formed into loops, both loops extending into the inside of the box, and the ends of said loops extending back to the outside of .the
' box.
loops and ends being bent into parallelism to lock the strip -in place.
6. A box, a cover therefor, and a hinge connection between said cover and said box, said connection comprising a pintle carried by the cover, and a strip of sheet material embracing they pintle, the ends of said strip being formed into oppositely extending channels the inner wallsbf which the folded strip being disposed through an aperture in the box with the material about the aperture resting in said channels.
Signed in the 'presence' of two subscribing witnesses.
