RAILROAD-TIE.
Specification ofLetters Patent. P t t 22, 1 2
Application filed September 29, 1920. Serial No. 413,567.
7 the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in railroad ties, particularly of that class in which the rails are clamped to the ties by a stationary and a movable clamp member.
It is the principal object of the invention to provide a tie of this character which is of a simple and inexpensive yet durable construction. I
A further object of the invention is the provision of a tie which allows of a quick and easy exchange of the rails as well as the movable clamp member.
Further objects and advantages of my invention will become known as the description proceeds, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a side view of a railroad tie constructed according to the presentinvention, partly in section.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof with the parts assembled.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 with the rail securing parts removed.
Fig. 4 shows in side and top plan View one of the clamping members, and i Fig. 5 is a detail View of a securing wedge.
The tie 10 of any preferred and suitable material is provided with the stationary clamping members 11 adapted to grip over the'outer foot of the base flange 12 of a rail 13 while the inner foot part of the flange 12 is engaged by the gripping member la of a movable clamp element 15 having also a downwardly inclined outer member 16 extending-into a chamber 17 ofthe. tie and resting with its upper edge against a stop pin 18 within the chamber 17.
At its center the tie 10 has a wedge-shaped depression 19 in its center for the reception of a wedge 20 which is entered into said depression with its lower part 21, the upper' part of which is provided with flanges 22 and 22 having perforations 23 and 24 for the passage of bolts 25 entering the tie 10.
The outer edges of the members 14 are beveled as at 26 to engage the outer faces of the wedge 20 when the parts are in place. I A bolt 27 is passed through the wedge and the tie to hold the parts in adjusted position. In operation, the outer rail foot flanges are placed under the stationary clamp 11 and then the movable clamp members 15 are'placed within thev central longitudinal depression 28 of the tie 10 engaging with their upper members 14v the inner foot fiangesof the rails and resting with the upper'edgesof their inclined lower members 16 a ainst the bolts. When then the wedge mem er'20 is placed in the depression 19 and secured to the tie by means of the bolts'25 passing through. the perforations 23 and 24 of the flanges 21,22 and the bolt 27 is secured in place, the parts will be clamped together in such amanner as to firmly hold the rails in place upon the tie.
It will be obvious, that changes may be -made in the general arrangement and construction .of the minor details without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. a i
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is- 1. In a railroad tie of the character described, the combination of the recessed and I chambered tie with stationary clamp members adapted to engage the foot flanges on I the outer sides of the rails, and movable clamp members adapted to engage the depressions of said tie, each of said last named members having an upper clamp member to engage the rail foot flange and alower in clined member entering the tie chamber, a stop pin in the chamber adapted to be engaged by the lower inclined member, a .wedge-shapedand flanged member, adapted to be placed into a central chamber of said tie and to engage with'its outer wedge faces beveled inner ends of said movable clamp members, and means for securing the parts intheir assembled position.
'2. Ina railroad tie of the-character described comprising a recessed and chambered body, movable and stationary clamp movable clamp members having beveled inner and forked outer ends, the first ends engaging the upper face of rail foot flanges, the inner ends of said last named members adapted to engage the lower face of stop pins Within the he chambers, and a'flan ed Wedge adapted to enter the central cham er of said tie and to engage beveled ed es of said movable members, and bolts to hold the parts in their assembled position.
In testimo'ny'wher'eof I have aflixed my Signature.
STANLEY YASKULKA.
