' provements in Vulcanizers, of which the following is a specification.
"This invention relates to vulcanizers and has particular reference to a new and useful improvement in closure devices which may be employed to advantage on vulcanizers and as well on other open mouthed receptacles.
It is an object of the invention to provide a strong, durable vulcanizer, of simple, economical construction, and to provide an easily operated, highly efiicient closure device therefor.
An important object is to provide an extremely simple, durable mechanism whereby a suitable cover may be hinged to a receptacle so that the cover when opened and closed will swing in a comparatively small space and to; thereby provide means whereby a greater number of vulcanizers may be positioned'in a given area. A further object is to provide a means for operatively supporting said closure member which will be easily and quickly adjustable to compensate for the wear incident to constant use.
The above and additional ends are attained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part hereof and wherein I have shown a preferred embodi- I ment of the invention, it being understood that the invention is capable of various adaptations and that changes, variations and modifications may be made or substitutions resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, the reference numeral 5 denotes the body of the vulcanizer which is preferably constructcd in the form of a hollow horizontal cyhnder, provided with one opened end 6.

so as to project therebeyond. The out-.
wardly projecting portion of the collar 7 is fashioned to provide a circumferentially extending bell flange 9, the inner face of which is provided with a bearing face 10 which extends therearound and is disposed at a right angle to the axis of the vulcanizer so as to form a seat for the closure member to be hereinafter described. The bearing face 10 is provided with an annular channel 11 adapted to receive a suitable packing ring 12. The bell flange 9 is provided adjacent its outer edge with a plurality of spaced, in-
ternal, regularly recurring lugs 13 whichproject inwardly and radially therefrom, thus providing a notch 14 between each lug 13. The lugs 13 and the notch 14 are of approximately the same circumferential width and are alternately disposed around the entire inner face of the bell flange 9. The closure device comprises a circular head 15 which is provided on its inner side adjacent its peripheral edge with an annular bearing face 16which is adapted to coincide with the'bearing face 10 on the collar 7 when the. head 15 is in a closed position. The head 15 is provided'on its peripheral edge with a plurality of spaced radial outwardly projecting lugs 17, thus providing the notches 18.' The lugs 17 on said closure evice correspond in circumferential width with the notch 14 on the flange 9; and, likewise, the notch 18 on the closure device and the lugs 13 on the flange 9 are of approxiwith the notch 14.
The vulcanizer head 15 is constructed with an outwardly projecting annular bulge 19 which is formed therein in spaced relation to the periphery thereof. The center is used to denote a bolt-like member which 'thus providingla cylindrical bore 21 which extends into t e outside of said head and constitutes a housing for the universal joint to be hereafter described. The said bore 21 is provided with screw threads 22 which are adapted to receive the external threaded, socketed, bearing block 23. The numeral 24 is provided with a ball head 25 adapted to seat in the socket 26 in said block '23 so that the said ball 25 may be retained in said bore 21 by means of said block 23 with] the shank of the member 24 projecting outwardly I through said socket 26. The numeral 27 denotes a coil spring which is compressed between the ball head 25 and the inner wall 28 of said bore 23 so as to maintainthe ball head 25 ina seated position in said socket 26. It will be seen that with the member 25 secured in a horizontal position as hereinafter described, the head will be secured thereto so as to allow a limited movement of said vulcanizer head 15 in every direction.
The collar 7 is provided on one side thereof with a pair of integral lugs 29 and 30 which project outwardly therefrom in spaced parallel relation, each lug is provided with a vertical bore which is formed therein with the saidbores in alinement with each other and a suitable pin 31 is mounted in the said vertical bores so as to be rotatable on a vertical axis. An arched arm 32 is rigidly secured to the upper end of the pin 31 so as to extend upwardly and radially therefrom. The arm. 32 is thus hinged to the collar 7 so that it may be swung in a horizontal plane and is constructed of suflicient length so that the free end thereof may be directly above the center of the vulcanizer head 15 when the same is operatively secured in the mouth of the said vulcanizer. The free end of the arm 32 is provided with a tapered bore 33, which is relatively small at the upper end and which is countersunk to provide a seat 35 for the bearing block 34. The lower surface of the block 34 conforms in contour to a portion of the surface of a sphere and the seat 35 is con- .structed to receive said spherical surface. The bearing block 34 is provided with a vertical bore which extends through the center thereof. The numeral 36 denotes a boltlike member which extends upwardly through the tapered bore 33 and' through the bore in the block 34 so as to project upwardly therebeyon'd. The upper end of said bolt-like member is provided with screw threads and the member is secured in said block 34 by means of the nuts 37 or other suitable fastening means. The lower end of the bolt-like member 36 is rigidly secured to a vertical arm 38 which extends outwardly and downwardly therefroih and ter- Inmates at a point approximately central of the vulcanizing head 15 when the same is secured in the mouth ofsaid vulcanizerp The lower end of-said arm 38 is provided with a horizontal bore which is adapted to receive the bolt-like member 24 hereinbefore described. 'The outwardly extending end of said bolt-like member 24 is threaded and the same is secured in a horizontal position therein by means of the nuts 39 or other suitable fastening means. It will thus beseen that the upper end of the vertical arm 38 is secured to the upper end of the arm 32 by means ofa universal joint which will permit a limited movement of the lower end of said arm in every direction. The inner. face 40 of said vertical arm 38 is flat and is provided with alug 41 which projects inwardly from said face. The lug 41 is provided with a suitable bore 42 which extends laterally therethrough. The head 15 is likewise provided with integral lugs 43 and 44' which project outwardly therefrom in spaced relation to each other'and at points adjacent the outer circumferential edge of the head 15.
Each of the lugs 43 and 44 is provided'with a bore in which the guide rod 45 is rigidly mounted so as to extend from the other 44. The rod 45 also extends through the bore 42 in the lug-41 which is positioned between the other twolugs 43 and-44. The bore 42 is substantially larger than the rod 45 and the vulcanizer head 15 is thus additionally secured to said vertical arm 38 with the lug 43 on one side of the vertical arm, 38 and the lug 44 on the other side thereof thus limitingthe movement of the head on the ball 25. Thenumeral 47 is used to denote suitable lugs'which project outwardly from the outer surface of the vulone lug 43 to at any desired depth and that the center of 1 gravity may thus be shifted as desired. It will also be seen that the peculiar construction of the cylindrical head 15 permits the.
same to be hung on said ball 25 so as to be balanced thereon and the same may be easily maintained on a horizontal axis.
In operation the head 15 is carried close to the mouth 6 of the vulcanizer by swinging the same on the arm 32. The head is then given a rotary movement to bring the lugs 17 on said head in alinement with the notches I 14 on the flange 9. The head is then moved inwardly until its face 16 is in contact with the face 12 on said collar 7: The lugs 17 are thus forced inwardly past the lug 13 on and the head 15 is brought outwardly in a.
straightline until it has cleared the flange 9 and is out of contact with the ln s 13, whereupon the vertical arm 38 is gradually turned while the arm 32 is swung to the position shown in Fig. 3. A careful examination of the drawings, and particularly Fig. 3, discloses animportant advantage of the invention, inasmuch as it will be noted that the head 15 can be swung to an open position in a relatively small space, and if .desired the same may be folded back: 'flat against the side of the body 5.'
It will. also be noted that the various parts are so constructed and assembled as to be quickly and easily adjusted should adjustment be necessary, because ofwear or for any other reason, and that the herein described device may be so adjusted while in use.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letadapted to ters-Patent is I 1. A vulcanizer comprising a horizontal receptacle having an open end, a collar secured around said open end, an arm hinged on said collar so as to swing on a vertical axis; said arm extending upwardly and outwardly so that its free end may be swung above the said collar, a vertical member secured to the free end of said arm by means of a universal joint so as to depend downwardly therefrom; a vulcanizer head be received in interlocking engagement by said collar, said head secured to the lower end of said member by means of a-universa-l joint and means to limit the movement of the head relative to saidmember.
2. A vulcanizer comprising a horizontal receptacle having an open end, an arm hinged on said receptacle so as to be rotatable on a vertical axis, a vertical supporting member secured to the free end of said arm so as to be rotatable on a vertical axis, a horizontal rod fixed to the lower end of said member, a vulcanizer head fixed to said rod so as to be rotatable on a horizontal axis givin and means to additionally secure said head to sald supporting member and limiting the movement thereof on said rod.
3. A vulcanizer comprising ahorizontal receptacle having an open end, a collar secured around said open end, a headfor said receptacle, said head and said collar provided'with interlocking portions so that the head may be secured therein; an arm hinged on said collar so as to be rotatable on a vertical axis, a vertical supporting member adjustably secured to the free end of said arm so as to be rotatableon a vertical axis and so the free end thereof may be given a limited lateral movement in any direction, the lower end of saidmember connected to the central portion of said head by means of a ball and socket joint and means to limit the movement of said head' relative to said member.
4. In a vulcanizer, a suitable receptacle having an opening, a collar on said opening,
a. cover adapted to fit into said collar, means to hinge said cover on said collar so that the same may be given a swinging movement on a vertical axis and rotated on a vertical axis and means to lock said cover in said collar. 5. In a vulcanizer, a suitable receptacle having an opening, a collar on said opening, a cover adapted tofit into said collar, said cover supported by an arm hinged on said collar so as to be swung in a horizontal plane, the said cover hinged to said arm so as to be rotatable on a vertical axis and given a limited rotary movement in a horizontal axis, said cover and said'collar provided with interlocking portions whereby the former maybe secured in the latter by the same a limited rotary movement. 6. n a device ofthe class described, a suitable receptacle having an opening; a collar on said opening; a cover adapted to fit into said collar, interlocking means where by the cover may be secured in said collar; an arm hinged to said collar so as to swing in a horizontal plane; a cover-supportingmember hinged to said arm so as to depend therefrom and be rotatable on a vertical axis and so the lower end thereof may be given a limited lateral swinging movement in every direction, the lower end of said member being hinged to said cover so that the latter may be movement on a normally horizontal axis substantially as herein set forth.
