WALLTQNSTEIN, (ll? lB lEtOUllKL'il N, NEW YORK.
" all whom it may concern.
Be it lCIlOWIl that 1, Leo VVALLENSTEIIN,
a citizen ofthe United States, and residing 1 at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stencils, oi wh ch the following is a speclfication,
such as will enable those skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to stencils and particularly toidevi ces of this class composed of a stencil element upon wh ch are arranged letters, numerals and .cha 'acters used in the stenclllng of. words and other characters on paclrageswhoxes and the like, and in connection with which a movable guide and ject oi? thisinvention is to provide the stencil element with improved. means for guiding the user in the operation of e device; a further object being to provide the nude and alinement member of the stencil with improved means for guiding the user in the operation of stenciling words and other characters; a still further object being to provide improved means for mounting and supporting; the inovabl.e guide member 1n connection. with the stencil element; and with these and other objects in view the in veution consists in a device of the class and for the purpose specified which is simple in construction and operation and which constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
. The inventionis itully disclosed in the tollowing specification, oiwhich the accompanying drawing forms a part,jin which the separate parts oi nay improvement pare designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is:a plairview of my improved stencil and indicating the method of its use;

Fig. 4: a view similar to lli g. 2 but showing only a detail. of the construction onan enlarged scale and showing .a .modllication.
. in practice, I provide a stencil element 5 which, in the form of construction shown,
is composed of a thin sheet metal dislrin Specification of lhe'tters'lfatent.
Application filed April 5, 1. 5 530. serial marines.
the opposite ends another Patented its w s which is stampedadjacent to the periphery 1 thereof the letters ofthe alphabet andother characters as shewn at ('3, and stamped in stenciling the numerals, words and characters 6. e i
The stencil element 5 is provided centrally with a countersunk aperture 11 formed by arais'ed and inwardly directedwall 12 and the stencil element 5is provided around the aperturn 11 with an iilpwardly directed annular head 13 and a movable guide. and alinemcnt member flat is mounted in connection withthe stencil element 5 and comprises an oblong strip of sheet metal, the inner end portion of which is reduced and rounded as shown. at 15 and provided with an aperture 1.6
within which the annular head 13 fits when the n'ienibcr 14L is mounted in connection with the elcineut'ii. The member 1.41: is held in position by a knob 17 secured to the stencil element 5 by a screw 1 8, the head of which fits 'in the countersunk aperture 11,
andthe bottom of the knob 17 rests on bears upon the top of the annular bead 1?; thus pern iitting ot the free rotation of the menu her 14-. around the annularbead 13 of the stencilelement 5 and said bead serves to hold the member 14. in proper position.
The movable guide and alinement member 14; is provided adjacent to its inner end with an irregularly shaped aperture 19 adapted to register with the numerals, words or characters 7 and outwardly of said aperture the member 14; provided with an other aperture 20 which is adapted to reg.
isterjwith the letters and characters 6 on the stencil element 5, and outwardly oi. the
aperture 530 tiemember 1.4L provided with guide and alinement aperture 21 which is located outwardly of the periphery oi? thestencil element 5, and is adapted to register with a letter, numeral or character stenciled on a aaclraee or box in orderto facilitate the alinementof the next letter, numeral or character to be stenclled on sald fmember'over the stencil element 5.
In the construction shown in Fig. i of the drawing, I have shown a slight 1110Cl1i1- cationin'which a ring member 24 is employed lnwardly of the annular bead 13 and -which is adapted to reinforce the central portion of the stencil element 5 and to take the thrust or bearing of the knob 17 on said stencil el'ementwhen the screw 18 is placed in position. The annular head 13 may also aid in taking up this thrust and will functionprimarily as a guide for the member 1 L or, in other words, will hold said member in proper position and will prevent any material radial movement thereof.
In the use of my improved stencil, the stencil element 5' is placed upon the pack age, article or box to be stenciled, and said element and movable guide and alinement members are manipulated to bring the let ters, characters, numerals and words in position and within the apertures 19 or 20,
and after one letter, numeral, character or word has been stenclled the next letter, nu meral, character or word is brought into position in either of the apertures 192(l and the member 14 is placed in such position as to bring the last letter, numeral or character stenciled within the aperture 21 in the manner illustrated in Fig. l, in which figure the letter L shown at 25 is visible through the aperture 21 and the bottom edge and inner edges of said letterare brought in line with the side wall 26 of the aperture 21, and the outer face of the wall 22, and this will bring the member 14L as well as the stenciled member 5 in proper alinement and the next letter which, in the construction shown, will be in proper alinement with said letter when stenciled. In the operation of applying the stenciling fluid to the letter S as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing or in any other operation of the device, it will be apparent that the guard wall-22 will prevent the stenciling fluid from passing outwardly of the stencil element 5.
-When a-numeral, word or character 7 is stenciled or in juxtaposition to a word, letter or other'character on a package orbox, the apertures 9 and lO-are used as guides for bringing such numerals, words or characters in proper alinement, and in this use it will be apparent that the inner edge of the last letter, numeral or character stenciled will be visible through the elongated apertures 9, while the top and bottom edges thereof will be visible through the apertures 110. I am aware of the fact that the elongated apertures 9 have heretofore been connected, but the apertures 10 employed in connection therewith are one of the distinctive features of this invention and materially aid in the proper alinement of stenciled words and characters in the use of the device, as will be apparent from the foregoing description, and while I have shown a specific form of stencil element with a specific ar rangenient of letters, numerals and characters thereon, my invention is not limited thereto, and various changes in and modilications of the construction herein shown and described may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacriiics ing its advantages.
