PERMUTATION LOCK.
APPLlcATloN FILED s5PT.26.1.91s.

INVENTOR EDWARD T. rionsns, or Havniariim., MASSACHUSETTS.
rEnMUTnTron-Locir.
Specification of Letters Patent.
retreated sept. a, iai a'.
Application filed September 26, 1916. Seriall'o. 122,275.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD T. Honens, a citizen of the United States, residing at Haverhill, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Permutation- Locks, of which the following is a specification. 1
This invention relates to a keyless padlock and more particularly to a padlock which will be provided with dials bearing a plurality of numerals and constructed to permit the shackle of the lock to be secured in locked position or swung into unlocked position according to the disposition of certain of the numerals on the dial.
The invention also `aims to provide a. keyless padlock which will be of such a simple design and consist oflsuch a minimum number of parts that the manufacture of the article will be cheap and at the same time the device will retain the necessary elements of durability and usefulness.
The above and additional objects are accomplished bysuch means as are illustrated in the preferred embodiment and in the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation.
Fig. 2 is an edge elevation partly broken away.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig-2.
Fig. 4E is a side elevation of one of the disks looking toward the inside thereof. y
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary section on the line 5-`5 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a section `on the line 6-6 of Fig. 3.
A central base plate 1 is of substantially circular formation and has integrally connected with its center the trunnions or pivots 2 upon which are rotatably` mounted the disks 3 and 4C. The central plate 1 is provided with a cut out portion or recess 5 which is designed to receive the latch-end 6 of a shackle 7. The opposite orypivot end of the shackle is arranged in a depression 8 formed in the central plate and which is of substantially V-shaped formation and is curved vat its vertex for receiving the rounded end of the shackle. Each of the disks 3 and 4L has an annular roove 9 formed adjacent the edge of each disk and adapted to recive the lugs or enlargements 10 which.
are integrally formed with the end of the shackle and act as means for allowing the shackle to be swung to unlocked position. It will he noted that this novel` manner of mounting the end of the shackle allows the central plate, disks and shackle to be assemand t are also provided with a recess 12` which entends into the central portion of the disks and connects with the annular grooves 9 and these recesses are adapted to receive the ends 13 of a bladelc which is a part of the locking dog 15. An operating stem 16 is integrally formed with the blade 14 and extends through an aperture 17 in the central plate l. The opposite side of the blade has a stem 1S which extends into the recess 11 and receives one end of an expansion coil spring 19 the opposite end of which contacts with the end of the recess ll and thereby normally tends to hold the blade out of engagement with the recesses 12.
The edge of the central plate 1 bears a plurality of circumferentially spaced gradua-` tions which are consecutively numbered and the edges of each of the disks 3 and l also are provided with circumferentially spaced graduations which are consecutively nurnbered and by alining certain of the numbers the notches 12 may be brought into position whereby the blade 14C may be thrust into the notches 12 by means of the operating member 16 and thereby release the latchend of the shackle from engagement with the blade 14, the latch-end 6 of the shackle being provided with a notch 6 which receives the blade 14E when the shackle is in locked position.
In reduction to practice I have found that the form of my invention illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most eflicient and practicable; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in the details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, as defined in the appended claims.
'i liti I claim:
l. In a permutation lock, the combination with a circular plate having rotatable disks mounted on each of its side faces, the saiddisks and the plate having recesses extendingyata tanoent to their peripheries, a lock- -ing dog including a blade received in the recess in the said plate and havingits ends projected beyond the sides of the plate, the saidfdisksdiaving annular grooves for i'eceivingftheends of the blade, the said re cesses in the disks `communieating with the annular grooves `whereby the ends of the cessesextendiiig ata tangent to their per `ripheries, a locking dog including a blade normally disposed in a horizontal plane and having its ends projecting outwardly lbeyond therecesses in the said circular plate, each of thef said disks having an annular groove for-receiving one of the ends 'of the said bla'deifthelsaid recesses in thedisks commu* nicating with the said annular grooves, a shackle having `its end adapted to -bemoved into tlierecesses in `Ithe said circular plate, the `said blade carrying `an operating `meniber,l the said member 'being projected'out-` wardly beyond the i periphery of the said circular plate', a coillspring engaging the plate" for normally'holding the said operat-i ing member in extended position, anda stein carried kby the blade and embraced by theisaid spring.
3.-'In a permutation lock, the combination with 5a central plate having a recess formed therein andV lformed at a tangentto the periphery of said plate; disks rotatably mountedV on said plate and alsoprovided witli'recesses disposedV at a tangent to the periphery of said disks, said disks and said plate being provided with a plurality of graduations-wliereby'the recesses in saidV plate and in said disksfmay be moved `into alii'iementl'or providing a laterally extending-coiitinuousslot of a substantial width, a
tending through an aperture 'in the periphery of said plate, a shackle, one end of the Vshackle being adapted to extendv intoan,
enlarged recess in said plate which comrnunicatesfwith theieeesses forming said slot,
the end of the shackle having a notch for receiving said blade, andresilientmeansin- A proximate yfaces having annular grooves, thef
said plate and the said disks each havingre` cesses disposed at a tangent and adapted to be transversely alined to establish commiinication between the saidannular grooves,` a
v shackle `having one Iend provided withfa notch, the shackle being piv-otally mount-ed for 'permitting the said notchto be alined with the said recesses, a horizontally dis@ posed blade, a stem projecting from one edge in its? periphery and rotatablycarryinga i disk on each of its oppositefaces, saiddisksl` and said plate provided withrecesses dis'`` posed at a tangent to' `their peripheriesywith` a lockingfdog disposed in one ofsaid recesses and adapted to be manually `operatediin `:one
direction for -movementinto said recesses,
each of said disks being provided withan annular groove for the reception offthe ends of said locking dog when in inoperative position, a shackle having its pivoted endfdisposed within one of therecessesin said plate;- andv carrying 4lugs whichy project laterally into said annular grooves, the opposite endv ofsaid shackle having .a notchffo'r the -reception of said locking dog, and resilient means `for normallyl holding said locking dog Copies'of'tliispateit may be obtained; for five cents:each, by faddressingvthe iidoimssionerof PatentsJy-` Washingtonyllyf i
