MOUNTING FOR DOOR-CLOSERS.

boxing Awhich requires no unusual care in its positioning, and thereafter locating `and adjusting the door-closer or the like within its seat in said boxing.
The present invention is designed to overcome the difficulties heretoforeencountered in positioning the boxing in the first instance and to permit the readjusting orv realinement of a door, gate or the like, at any time after` a building `has been completed. The invention comprises the employment with any suitable formof door-closer or the like of a boxing adapted to be embedded,- by ordinary workmen and without the exercise of any particular'amount of care,-in the flooring beneath the door during the process of constructing the floor, and the provision of suitable means to allow subsequent horizontal adjustment of the door-closer in any direction.
The inventive idea involved is capable of.
receiving a variety of mechanical expressions7 one of which, for the purpose ofv illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawings, but it is to be -expressly understood that such drawings arefor the purpose of illustration only and. are notmeant to define the limits of theinvention,
reference being hadto the appended 'claims for this purpose. Referring to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a -preferred embodiment of the invention,
Figure 1 is a plan view of the device in place, and partly broken away, showing a horizontal section through a portion of one door-jamb and a right-hand door;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through the lines II-'II of Figl 1; and
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section through the line III-III of Fig. 2.
The boxing consists of a substantially rectangular metal frame 1' open at the top and made up of the vertical sides land ends having preferably inturned flanges at the top. Preferably one side-wall may have an undercut offset adjacent'the axis of the hinged door, so as to extend beneath the door as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. 2 indicates a usual form' of casing that contains the mechanism of' a door-closer and check such as shown in my patents numbered 1,025,309, 1,064,255, and 1,064,256. Such mechanism comprises the vertical spindle 3.' This spindle supports, and has made fast toit, the olf-set end of the plate 4 which is secured to the lower edge of the door 5 tosupport the latter, in the wellknown manner.l V6 represents aportion of one door-j amb. Secured to or integral with the casing 2 is the cover-plate 7,. which rests upon the boxing 1 and is suppo-rtedthereby.
During the operation of constructing the building and making theV concrete flooring, the boxing 1.is embedded in the concrete in approximately the proper location, and thereafter when the door-frame has been put into position and the door fitted therein, the casing 2 containing the door-closer and check is seatedv in the boxing and readily and easily adjusted into any desired position by means of certain devices which will now be described. v
8 represents a plurality of lugs, offset from near the. bottom of frame 1 and having vertical ,holes therethrough. These holes may themselves be threaded to act as nuts for the screw-bolts I1() which pass through the cover-plate? or, if desired, the lugs may be provided with ordinary nuts suitable for engagement with the bolts 10. In'the preferred form, however, elongated headed nuts 9 are fitted loosely in these' holes and their ends slightly upset, as indicated in Fig. 3, whereby the nutsare'held loosely in place and free to rock slightly. The bolt-holes ,in the cover-plate 7 may be somewhat larger than the shanks of the bolts, by reason of which and of the loose mounting of the nuts 9 the bolts are more 0r less tiltable out of vertical position, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig 3. It is to be understood, however, that the invention is not limited to this specific arrangement, as it has been demonstrated that, for ordinary purposes, the bolts l0 can be sufficiently tilted to permit the desired adjustment even when common nuts are used,-on account of play between the threads of bolts and nuts respectively; more play, if desired, can be readily attained by having' more loosely-fitting nuts.
Preferably, also, the upper' corners of the boxing may be rounded off slightly, or (what is the same thing) the centers of thc endwalls and side-walls of the boxing may rise somewhat higher than the corners, as seen in Fig.
After the door-closer (comprising the parts 2 and 7) is seated in the boxing and the bolts inserted and engaged with their respective nuts, the door-closer is free to be shifted horizontally to the proper position, by reason of the tiltability of the bolts; and when the device has been properly positioned, the bolts are screwed down firmly; and, if desired, the corners of the cover-plate 7 can be forced down over the rounded corners of the boxing, thus locking the plate (and the door-closing device) against displacement.
If desired, the upper surface of plate 7 may be finished in a manner pleasing to the eye, or it may be only roughly finished to receive a finished plate 1l on top.
The invention has thus been described with considerable detail, but only for the sake of clearness; since it is not limited to the preoise construction and arrangement of parts set forth, but may be embodied in various forms.
Having thus described the invention, the following is claimed:
l. A door-closing device, comprising a stationary socket-member, an actuating-member seated therein, rocking-nuts carried loosely yet securely by one of said members, and clamping-bolts passing through the other member and engaging said nuts.
2. A permanently embedded boxing hav-v ingn substantially vertical Walls, a door-closing device seated in said boxing` and comprising an arching plate adapted to rest upon said Walls as a cover for said boxing and the upper edge of said Walls of said boxing shaped to fit the plate aforesaid, and adjust- -able means for securing said plate and device to said boxing.
3. A door-closing device comprising a boxing adapted to be permanently embedded in the flooring, actuating-means adapted to be seated adjustably in said boxing, and angularly-tiltable bolts and nuts securing the same in place.
4. A door-closing device, comprising a boxing adapted to be permanently embedded in a concrete Hoor or the like to constitute a socket, an actuating-device adapted to be seated in said socket, and angularly-tiltable bolts for securing said device in said socket and permitting adjustment in any direction horizontally.
5. A door-closing device, comprising a boxing adapted to be permanently embedded in the flooring to form a socket, actuatingmeans adapted to be seated insaid socket, and means for locking said actuating-means in any desired horizontal adjustment, either lateral or longitudinal or angular.
G. A door-closing device, comprising a permanently-fixed socket, horizontallymdjustable actuatingmeans therein, and means for securing the latter in any desired adjustment, bodily as woll as angular.
7. ln a structure of the character described, an inclosing casing containing a spindle therein for connection with the door and also containing cooperative mechanism of a` door-closer and check which co-mpriscs the spindle aforesaid, a removable coverplate for said casing up through which said spindle projects, a cement-box to receive said casing and being longer and Wider than the same, adjustable means at both ends of said cement box to engage said casing for alining the same With respect to the door to be hung, and a finishing cover-plate for said casing and box.
8. 1n a structure of the character described, an inclosing casing containing a spindle therein for connection With the door and also containing coperative mechanism of a door-closer and check which comprises said spindle, a removable cover-plate for said casing up through Which said spindle projects, a cement-box to receive said casing and at its upper edges being fiush With the upper edges thereof, and a finishing covcrplate over said casing and its cover-plate and the top of said cement-box and secured to said cement-box.
9. In a structure of the character described, an inclosing casing containing a spindle therein for connection with the door and also containing coperative mechanism of a door-closer and check which comprises the spindle aforesaid, a removable coverplate for said casing up through Which said spindle projects, a cement-box to receive said casing andpbeing longer and Wider than the same, and adjustable means at both ends of said cement-box to engage said casing for alining the same With respect to the door to be hung.
10.
