DOOR CLOSER HINGE.
AT r LED JuNEl 1 Patented Feb. 6, 1917.
lUNITED sTATFs PATENT OFFICE.
MORRIE BRAND, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOSEPH HUGHES, 0F SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
Doon CLOSER-HINGE.
' specication.
This invention-relates to certain new and useful improvements in door closer hinges for double acting swing doors and the like and it has for its objects among others to provide a simple, cheap, yet efficient, durable and reliable hinge, composed of few parts,
thosereadilyassembled, not liable to get out of order and which dispenses with all heavy cumbersome springs, boXings and plates such as heretofore used l and vwhich will work Vfreely and lightly vand without any undue accelerated movement.
vMy improved hinge allows the setting of doors' to be almost air-tight, and provision is made for adjustment to keep the door close to the head jarnb.'l
I provide a beveled wheel which practically avoids all friction and gives a quick and easy action.
By the employment of a hinge, such as hereinafter disclosed, one is enabled to hang a double action swing door with ease and rapidity and with little labor.
Other objects and advantages of the invention wil hereinafter appear and the'novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the nu- VInerals of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section showing my improved hinge applied to a door. Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
4C is a lperspective view of the adjusting plate.V4 Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the floorplate. ,Y
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.
The invention is capable of embodiment in a variety of forms, that herein shown being what I consider, at the present time, most desirable.V

Fi.' 3 is a bottom perspective view 'of the whezl. boX plate with the barrel'broken away. Fig. Y
Patented Feb. 6, 1917.
Referring `to .the drawings, l designates a door and2fits frame.
3vis a floor and-l a plate-having at each corner a hole 5 for the reception of screws G bywhich it is secured `tothe floor with one edge close up totherjamb, as seen in v Fig. 1. This plate is provided substantially centrally with an opening.- 7 and another disposed substantially vU-shaped member 15,'
the upper face of which is fbeveled, as at 16, from the longitudinal median line in opposite directions lengthwise of the side portions of said member.v
17 is a plate secured by screws or the like 19.150 the under face of the top of the door frame.
20 is a plate secured-tothe top edge of the doorby screws or the like 22, the plates 17 and 20 being set in flush, the plate 20 havingan upwardly extended pin 23 engaging a hole in the plate 17 and a corresponding hole 25 in the top of the frame.
In practice, a washer26 is usually employed surrounding the-pin 2 3 and interposed between the plates 17 and-2O so as to keep the door from rubbing the upper portion of the frame or head jamb.
27 isa plate having holes 28 for the reception of screws 29 for securing it to the bottom edge of the door, said plate being set in flush, as seen in Fig. 1. Integral with or fixed to this plate 27 is a barrel3() and a pin 31proj ects downwardly -from said plate and adapted to `pass through'the opening 14 in the adjusting plate 11 and through the elongated opening 9 in theplate 4@ and into the hole 10 in the floor, as seen in Fig. 1. This barrel is adapted to be inserted in a hole 32 bored in the door from the under side, and movable through an opening 33 in the bottom of said barrel is a yoke`34 mounted for reciprocation therein and having a stem or rod 35 which passes through an opening 36 in the head 37 at the inner end of the barrel,
the'end of said stem or rod beingscrewthreaded, as at 38', and receiving anut 39 bearing against the end -37 'of the barrel. Around this stem or rod is al spring having a bearing at one end against Vthe inner face of the head 37 and at its other end against the yoke 34, all as seen clearly in Fig. 1. Mounted in the'yoke 34 to revolve freely -is a bevel Vwheel! 4:1 which is adapted to travel on the cam or,inclined, facesY 16 of the member 15 on the plate 11.
The bevel wheel riding onthe inclined faces 16 of themember 15V reduces the .friction to a minimum and insures a quick and easy action. i'
Y By making the stem 35 screw-'threaded and providing the nut 39, I can 'readily raise orlower the stem so as to tighten or loosen the spring and 'thus keep the door almost perfectly tight to the head j amb. Y I
. The elongated slots 12and 13 0in the ad justing plate l1 permit of adjustment of the plate'in either direction, as maybe desired, to bring the pins 23 and Y31 indirect vertical alinement, Vas existingcircumstances may require. l i p Modifications in details may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacriiicing any of its advantages.
What is claimed as new is:-
l. A door closer Vhinge embodying a plate for attachment t0 the floor, an adjusting plate for coperation therewith'having oppositely disposed cam faces, a plate for attachment to.l a door having a depending 1 member engagedin coincident openings in said plates,.a tubular member and a springactuated beveled wheel movable within said tubular member and engageable with said cam surfaces.
2. A door closer hinge comprising a plate for attachment to the floor and having an elongated slot, an adjusting plate having transversely elongated slots and a plate for attachment `to a door having a pin engagespring around said Stem and means for ad- Justing the tension', of the spring, combined with a plate attachable to the floor and a plate for coperation therewith having an elongatedslot and having cam surfaces for engagement by said wheel, the said depending pin engageable in coincident openings in the two last-named plates.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
