To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. JUENGST, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Croton Falls, inthe county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Cutting Machines, of which the following is a specilication.
The present invention relates to paper cutting machines, and has more particularly reference to cutting machines used in connection with a travelin ,conveyer such as is used for instance in boo covering machines.
This application is a division of one filed Sept. 26, 1913, Serial No. 791,942 for pamphlet coverers.
The main object of the invention is to provide means whereby the stock may be cut while in transit, and the invention consists of the features of construction, combination of parts and arrangement of elements hereinafter set forth in the claims, a concrete and preferred form of which is disclosed in the accompanying speciiication and drawlngs.

The paper cutting device is arranged to act on the book or stock 52 fed by the conveyer here represented as a clamp 50. This clamp supports the stock in an upright position as shown and is given a motion in a longitudinal direction that is in the direction indicated by the arrow X between Fi s. 1 and 2. i
he cutting machine preferably acts on the book without stoppage of the conveyer, and has therefore imparted to it a cutting motion toward and in the same direction as the book conveyer.
The paper cutting machine preferably has a pressure exerting means 53 and a cutting member 54. These are so arranged that the pressure exerting means 53 reaches the book clamping means 55 of the book conveyer before the cutting member 54 engages the book, the cutting member 54 continuing its movement while the pressure exerting means is engaging the clamp 55 and traveling along with it. On the other side of the path of the book conveyer is an abutment member 56 and a backing member 57. The backing member 57 coperates with the cutting member 54, and the abutment member 56 coperates with the pressure exerting means 53. The members 56 and 57 travel longitudinally with the book during the cutting operation, but have no transverse movement.
Various means may be provided for imparting the inward and forward motion to the cutting machine, but in the present instance an eccentric device is preferably utilized for this purpose because of its simplicity. It is preferred, however, to have' but a single source of power for a'll of the members of the cutting machine. But inasmuch as an eccentric or crank motion imparts a variable speed, and inasmuch as the pressure exerting means must travel forward at substantially the same speed as the book conveyer, the speed of which is unform, suit-able compensating devices are utilized to permit the pressure exerting means to be driven from the crank at a uniform speed while engaging the clamping means of the book conveyer.
The preferred embodiment of the paper cutting machine is therefore as follows: A supporting member is provided composed of two parts 58 and 59 which receives motion from the shaft 60 by means of the bevel gears 61, vertical shafts 62, disks 63 and crank pins 64. Interposed between the parts 58 and 59 is the pressure exerting member 53. The parts 58 and 59 are preferably provided with friction producing material 65, leather in the present case. -Diagonal slots 66 are provided in the pressure exerting member andi pins 67 pass loosely through the member 59 and are in threaded engagement with the member 58. Surrounding these pins are the springs 68 bearing against the member 59 and Whose tension may be varied by means of the nuts 69. There the pins 67 pass through the diagonal slots 66 they are provided with antiriction rollers 70 of :a diameter substantially equal to the width of the diagonal slots 66. The member 53 is provided with cut-away portions 71 to clear the bolts 72 which fasten the cutting member 54 to the part 58 of the supporting member.y All these devices, are arranged on one side of the path of the book conveyer. On the other side of the path of the book conveyer there is arranged a guide 72a on which slides a carriage 73. Mounted on this carriage is the backing member or surface 57 and the abutment member or surface 56. Anti-friction rollers 74 are provided against which the reciprocating carriage 73 slides. Pivotally connected to the carriage -73 and 74a is a rod 75 which extends loosely into the guides 76 carried by the pressure exerting member 53.
The rotation of the shafts 62 imparts a combined inward and forward and a combined outward and rearward movement to the parts 58 and 59 of the supporting member by reason of the disks 63 and crank pins 64. This causes the cutting member and the pressure exerting member to move toward the book conveyer and longitudinally with it. The pressure exerting member 53 will reach the clamp 55 before the cutting member reaches the book. Then, owing to the pin and slot construction, the pressure exerting member will be allowed to travel along with the book substantially at the speed of the latter. The cutting member 54 will constantly increase its speed and will finally overtake the pressure exerting member and cut the back of the book oil longitudinally with a shearing cut and will then recede with a. gradually retarded movement. The pressure exerting member will also recede, with the cutting member until the member 53 strikes against the stop 53, when owing to the area and slot construction, the said member 53 will be brought forward of the cutting member. Meanwhile theabutment member and the backing member will have traveled forward with the book at substantially the speed thereof, owing to the connection between the pressure exerting member and the carriage73, and, after the book is cut, will return to their original position.
lVhat is claimed is:
1. A paper cutting machine comprising: a stock conveyer having clamping means for the stock, and having a traveling movement, a cutting member located on one side of the on the clamping means during the' cutting Y operation.
2. A paper cutting machine comprising: a stock conveyer having clamping means for the stock and having a traveling movement, a backing member and an abutment member disposed on one side of the path of the conveyer, pressure exerting means for the stock clamping means and a cutting device disposed on the other side of the path of the conveyer, actuating means for imparting a variable motion to the cutting device into and out of the path of the stock, compensating means operated from the actuating means for causing the pressure exerting means to travel at a constant speed substantially equal to the speed of the stock conveyer, and means forz causing the backing and abutment members to follow the movementf the stock conveyer.
3. A paper cutting machine comprising: a stock conveyer having clamping meaiisfor the books, and having a traveling movement, pressure exerting means for the book clamping means and a cutting device disposed adjacent to the path of the book conveyer, eccentric actuating means for imparting motion to the cuttin device and compensating means operated rom the actuating means for causing the pressure exerting means to i travel at a constant speed substantially equal to the speed of the stock conveyer.
4. A paper cutting machine comprising: a supporting member consisting of ltwo parts, a pressure exerting member mounted between the two parts of the supporting member, a spring pressed pin and slot connectlon between the pressure exertlng memmotion to the cutting member continuing after the pressure exerting member has engaged the stock.
6. A paper cutting machine comprising: a stock conveyer, having a traveling movement, a cutting member disposed on one side of the conveyer, means for imparting a cutting motion to the cutting member, a reciprocating carriage on the other side of the conveyer With which the cutting member coacts, and means for actuating the carriage from the cutting member.
7. A paper cutting machine comprising: a stock conveyer, having a traveling movement, a cutting member disposed on one side of the conveyer, means for imparting an eccentric cutting motion tothe cutting member, a reciprocating carriage on the other side of the conveyer against'which the cutting member acts, and means for imparting a uniform speed to the reciprocating carriage from the cutting member.
8. A paper cutting machine comprising: a stock conveyer, having a traveling movement, a cutting member and a pressure exerting member arranged on one side of the conveyer, means for imparting cutting-motion to the cutting member at a variable speed, means for operating the pressure exerting member at a uniform speed from said cutting member, a. reciprocating carriage on the other side of the conveyer With Which the cutting and pressure exerting members coact, and means for actuating the carriage from the pressure exerting member.
9. A paper cutting machine comprising: a stock conveyer, having a traveling movement, a cutting member and a pressure eX- erting member arranged on one side of the conveyer, means for imparting an eccentric cutting motion to the cutting Kmember at a variable speed, means for operating the pressure exerting member at a uniform speed from said cutting member, a reciprocating carriage on the other side of the conveyer with Which the cutting and pressure exerting members coact, and means for actuating the carriage from the pressure exerting member.
10. A paper cutting machine comprising: a stock conveyer having a traveling movement and adapted to support stock in an upright position, a cutting device located adj acent to the path of the stock conveyer, and means for imparting a cutting motion to said device toward and in the same direction as the travel of the stock conveyer to cut the stock longitudinally.
11. A paper cutting machine comprising: a stock conveyer having clamping means to support stock in an upright position and having a traveling movement, a cutting device located adjacent to the path of the stock conveyer, means for 'imparting a cutting motion to said device toward and in the same direction as the travel of the stock conveyer to cut the stock longitudinally, and means, traveling in the same direction as the stock conveyer, for temporarily exerting pressure on the clamping means during the Cutting operation.
212. A paper cutting machine comprising: a stock conveyer having a traveling movement adapted to support stock in an upright position, a cutting member located on one side of the path of the stock conveyer, means for imparting a cutting movement to the cutting member toward and in the same direction as the travel of the stock conveyer to cut the stock longitudinally, and a backing member on the other side of the path of the stock conveyer against which the cutting member acts and adapted to travel in the same direction as the stock conveyer during the cutting operation.
13. A paper cutting machine comprising: a backing member and a cutting member oppositely disposed with relation to each other, means for causing the backing and cutting members to travel in the same direction and for causing the cutting member to approach the backing member to cut stock longitudinally, and means for feeding stock in 'an upright position between the backing and cutting members and for causing it to travel in the same direction as the joint travel of the two members While being cut.
14. A paper cutting machine comprising: a stock conveyer having a traveling movement and adapted to support stock in an upright position, a cutting device located adjacent to the path of the stock conveyer, and means for imparting an eccentric cutting motion to the cutting device into and out of the path of the stock carried by the conveyer to cut the stock longitudinally.
15. A paper cutting machine comprising: a backing member having a longitudinal movement, and a cutting member, said members being oppositely disposed with relation to each other, means for imparting an eccentric cutting motion to the cutting device to cut the stock longitudinally, and means for feeding stock in an upright position between the backing' and cutting members and for causing it to travel longitudinally With the backing member.
16. A paper cutting machine comprising: means for conveying stock in an upright position, a cutting device, traveling with the conveying means, means for causing the cutting device to act on the stock to cut it longitudinally, and means for exerting pressure on the stock before the cutting member acts on the stock and during the cutting action.
