CONTAINER LABEL AND GUARD.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, WILLIAM H. MERK- LEE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Union Hill, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, and JAMES H. GERAGHTY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bogota, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved .Container Label and Guard, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to means for distinguishing containers, bottles, boxes and the like, and is an improvement on our former application, Serial Number 136,614, filed December 13, 1916, and which has eventuated in Patent No. 1,238,551, and has for an object the provision of an improved construction designed to be attached to containers, bottles, boxes and the like, whereby they may be readily distinguished either in the dark or in the light.

Another object of the invention is to provide a combined label and guard which may be connected with the bottle by adhesive or through clamping means in such a manner as to be retained on the bottle, box, container or the like and in such a position as to be engaged by a hand grasping the bottle.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a label, and guard in which an opening is provided so as to disclose the usual label on a bottle, box, container or the like after the guard has been applied.

Referring to the accompany drawing by numerals, 1 indicates a guard which may be formed of any suitable material, as for instance paper which is supplied with a sanded or roughened surface 2 on one side, and a glued surface 3 on the opposite side. It is, of course, understood that any form of adhesive could be substituted for the glue used without departing from the invention. At a convenient point in the guard 1 is provided an aperture 4 so as to disclose therethrough a label 5. Most druggists have a supply of printed labels on hand continuously and consequently they would hesitate in buying new labels or guards if they are Specification of Letters Patent.

compelled to throw away their old supply. By supplying the opening 4 the old labels mayv be'used and readily observed'at any time. The guard 1 is provided with an extenslon 7 which normally fits into the notch 8 at the opposite end when the guard is in position. A tab 9 is secured to the body 1 by an adhesive in such a manner as to cover the notch 8 with the adhesive part of the tab facing the same direction as the sanded surface of the body 1. The rear of the body 1 is provided with an adhesive so that it may be secured to a bottle or other container and the projection 7 readily secured to the tab 9 either in notch 8 or at a distance from said notch. In using the guard on a bottle it may be found that the bottle is slightly larger than the guard so that the projection 7 will not fit into the notch 8, in a case of this kind the projection 7 is overlapped as far as possible on the tab 9 and then secured in place which will hold the guard properly in position and give the desired effect.

In Fig. 2 will be seen a further modified form of the invention in which the slot 10 is provided with lateral slits 11 and 12 whereby a tongue 13 is provided. This ar rangement permits the tab 14 to be inserted with greater ease when the device is applied. In connection with tab 14 it will be noted that same is provided with slits 15 and 16 so that the center part of the tab may ex tend through slot 10 as far as necessary while the parts on each side of the central part or tongue are pasted to the back of the body 1. A notch 17 is provided in the body 1 which permits the end or at least part of the centerpart of the tab 14 to be pasted upon itself after having been thrust through. the slot 10. This will provide a quick positive securing of the guard in position without waiting for the glue to dry to properly adhere as two adhesive surfaces are brought together.

' What we claim is:

1. A guard of the character described comprising a body having a projection at one end and a notch at the opposite end, and a tab secured to said body so as to cover said notch, said tab being arranged with the adhesive side facin the same direction as the front of said b0 y.

2. A guard of the character described comprising a body having a recess or notch in one end and a projecting member at the opposite end'in line with said notch, an opening spaced from the end through which the label may be seen When the guard is in position, and a tab secured to the notched. end of the body, said tab overlapping said notch so that a central line through the notch will extend centrally through the tab, said tab being provided With an adhesive.

3. A guard of the character described comprising a body formed with av sanded front and having an opening spaced from same direction as the front of the body and "a tab on the end opposite said notch, said last mentioned tab being adapted to fit into said notch.
