WELDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 22, 1918.
Application filed Kay 24, 1917. Serial No; 170,628.
This invention relates to guiding and directing mechanism.
This invention has utility when incorporated in holders for guiding and progress ing lengths of material, for instance in seam welding apparatus as in oxy-acetylene welders.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an embodiment of the invention in an oxy-acetylene welder for the production of tubingfrom rolled sheet metal stock by longitudinal seam welding;
Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the inner welder roll in section with features of its mounting and the guide;
F Fig. 3 is a section on the line III-III, ig. 2; e v Fig. 4 is a plan view of the welder rolls with the delivery and receiving rolls in position relatively thereto;
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary side elevation of features of adjustment and mounting of the outer welder roll; and
Fig. 6 is a View of the welder rolls look-' from the receiving roll side toward the de ivery rolls.
Mounted upon the supports or legs 1 is the frame unit 2 having bearing boxes 3 for parallel shafts 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. This frame unit 2 positively determines the spacings between the various shafts and precludes alinement diiiiculties arising in machine assembly. Upon the shafts 9, 10, are the delivery rolls 11, 12, in a common plane, comprising an opposing pair, the upper roller 11 having the fin 13 therein for holding the split side of the unwelded tube in position. against rotation so that this opening or seam may be engaged by the guide roller 14 carried by the forked stem 15 having flattened sides 16 engaged by the U-washer- 17 which has openings 18 therein. In one opening 18 extends a pin 19 from the lower arm 20 while through the other opening 18 extends a pin 21 from the upper arm 22.
' pin bearing 26 is the arm rolls 11, 12, and the The arm 22 extends as a link to the uproll 24. This shaft 23 is vertically mounted in the arm 25, swingably mounted on the pivot bearing 26, disposed in the plane of the axesof the shafts 9, 10, but transversely of said axes and in the plane of the medial tube stock carrying grooves of theopposing rolls 11, 12. Also mounted on this pivot 27 carrying the upright shaft 28 on which is mounted the outer welder roll 29 as well as the arm,
or link 20.
The pair of welder rolls 24, 29, may be adjusted in their vertical the action of the wheel 30 on the supplementary stem 31, serving to lift the bearing 26 and its collar 32,- thereby raising the arms 25, 27. When the desired adjusted position is obtained, this stem 31 may be locked by the wing nut 33. This adjustment may serve to bring the center line of the groove of the rolls 24, 29, which are transverse of the plane ofthe grooves of the rollers 11, 12, into the mid-intercepting point'for accurate alinement between these delivery pair of opposing receiving rolls 34, 35, that the tube pressed into sealing position by the welder rolls 24, 29, may pass through these receiving rolls to the staggered straightening rolls 36, 37, 38, respectively mounted on the shafts 6, 5, '4, for delivering a completed straightened tube with a continuous seam upon one side longitudinally thereof. The frame 2 is shown as having an opening therein from the top above the roll 37 (Fig. 1).
The squeezing action or approximating of the welder rolls 24, 29, to each other may be adjusted by the hand wheel 39 acting on the shaft 40 having the threaded portion 41, coacting with the swivel nut 42, carried by the arm 27, the opposite end of this shaft engaging the swivel holder '43, pivotally mounted in the arm 25.
The shaft .40 is held against reciprocation relatively to the bearing 43 by the collars 44.
For alining the welder rolls 24, 29, as to each other in a horizontal plane and as to the vertical plane of the terminal pair of delivery rolls and terminal pair of receiving rolls between which is this intermediate pair right shaft 23, loosely carrying the welder A position through a guide wheel 1 features of adjus ment.
o no 5 a drum,
of welder rolls, the bearing shaft 28 of the roll 29 is verticallv adjustable through the action at the nut A5 (Fig. 5) on the threaded portion 46 or" this shaft 28, The ad usted position is locked by the wing nut d7.
The arm 27 has the extension 48 as a channeled guide for the transverse guide 48 adjusted by screw 48 in which is reciprocable the upstanding arm 49 as actuated by the screw 50. This upstanding arm A9 has the pivot bearing 51 in which is mounted the rockable bracket 52, the position of which is adjusted by the screw 53 in the upstanding bracket member 49. This rockable bracket 52 has a guide section 54 carrying the screw 55 connected to reciprocate the element 56 therein. This element 56 has a transverse eye 57 through which may extend the tubular member 58, the angular position of which may be adjusted by the set screw 59.
This cylindrical or tubular member 58 has a terminal eye 60 which may be clamped by the screw or for holding an cry-acetylene torch 61 in the desired position back or the Shouldthere be any weave in the rolled sheet metal to be formed into a tube at the open side, I may be shifted by such traveling tube, and
its mid-position holding-guide 1 3:, to carry therewith the torch so that even these delicacies of movement may not tend to detract from a proper heating of the opposing edges so that each is suiiiciently softened to be squeezedinto a holding seam as it is gripped by the opposing welder rolls 2%, 29, due to the driving action of the delivering rolls and the withdrawing action of the receiving rolls and straightening roll 57.
l Vater circulation supply is provided by the pipe 62 for effective cooling, and pet cocks 63 may deliver water into the chambers of the welder rolls 24,29, to lreep such rolls tilled with water that overflow may occur through the pipes 6% into the pans-65 having waste lines 66 therefrom.
The machine may be driven from the pulley 6-7 on the shaft 68 acting through worms 69 and worm wheels 70 to drive the shafts 10, 8, 5, accordingly making rolls, 12, 35, 37, live rolls. The upper rolls may have their bearings adjusted toward the lower driving rolls by the hand-wheels 71 acting upon the screws 72 connected to the upper bearings 3 for the respective shafts t, 6., 7, 9. This adjustment will take care or" clearance for difierent gages or stock, varying diameters of the rolls, and other The torch adjustment, when once etermined, is automatically maintained while the nicety or the various adjustments for initially placing the welder rolls insures the production of a uniform high grade product. l 7hatever may be the adjustment between the o poswelder rolls 94-, 29,
ing welder rolls, the guide wheel 14: is locked for mid-travel and in the position just in.
