GAME.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 8, 1918.
Application filed October 2, 1916. Serial No. 123,250.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLARD STRAIGHT, of New York, in the county of New York, and in the State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Games, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates particularly to a game designed to interest and amuse players in problems of war.
The object of my invention is to provide a game which is of such a character that it will amuse and educate the players to think about and be interested in problems involved in warfare. A further object is to provide a game which may be played with considerable ease, but which, at the same time, affords a suflicient number of difliculties, and is of a sufliciently varied character to require a considerable degree of skill, so that by playing the game the skill of the player may continually develop. In this way the game is of such a characterthat it will continue to engage the interest of the players for a long period of time, notwithstanding the fact that the game may have been played a great many times.
While my invention is capable of embodiment in many different forms, for the purpose of illustration I have shown only one form thereof in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan View of a game made in accordance with my invention, and
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings I have provided a base of fiber or other suitable material, which is divided into two parts, 1 and 2, and which has a covering offelt 8, or other suitable material adapted to retain in position thereon disks 4, with which the game is played. Inasmuch as the covering of felt 3 connects the two parts 1 and 2-together, it acts as a hinge so that the parts 1 and 2 may be readily folded over each other when the game is not in use. In the upper surface of the base there is provided a depression 5 representing a stream of water. Over the stream 5 there is a bridge 6. The features of the game at the two sides of the stream 5 are the same, and one side alone will, therefore, be described in detail. At the side of stream 5 there is an elevation 7 which may be denominated a hill. On the hill 7 there are located blocks 8 having the representation of wire entanglements thereon which are situated in front of earth works 9, and arranged to be placed in different positions in holes 8, according to the skill of the players. Behind the earth works 9 there are trenches 10. In the rear of the trenches 10 there is a representation of a castle with battlements 11, in which there is indicated a gun position 12. At either side of the castle there are further gun positions 13. A road 14 leads from one side of the castle which may represent the entrance thereof to the bridge 6. As representing the entrance to a mine by which the trenches 10 and the castle 11 may be attacked I may provide a slot 15 of just sufficient size to hold one of the disks 4.
In the operation of the game, any number of persons from one to six may play, using the gun positions 12 and 13 as bases from which to discharge disks 4 by pressing upon the edge thereof with other disks of the same character. It will be observed that various obstructions are to be overcome in the playing of the game. For example: The stream 5 is an obstruction, which will stop any one of the disks 4, provided it falls in its course before having crossed the stream. The wire entanglements 8 serve a similar function immediately before the' earth works 9. The earth works 9 provide another similar obstruction or hazard. Finally, the battlements 11 provide the supreme obstruction. These various obstructions protect various positions which are to be reached by the disks 4 when discharged in the manner previously described, and the counting will be made according to the place reached and the difiiculty encountered in reaching the same. The portion of the ground just beyond the stream 5 will count I; the roadway 14 in front of the Wire entanglements 8 will count II; the portion "of the field at either side of the castle 11 will count III; the portion of the castle beyond the gun position 12 will count IV; the bridge 6 will count V; the portion of the roadway behind the trenches 10 will count VI; the wire entanglements 8 will count VII; the trenches 10 will count VIII; the gun positions 13 will count IX; the gun position 12 will count X, and the slot 15 representing a tunnel for a mine will count XXV. The persons playing the game will play alternately. If two persons are play ing, one will-occupy the three gunpositions 12 and 13 at one end ofthe board, and the other person will occupy the three gun positions 12 and 13 at the other end of the board. If four persons are playingeach will occupy one of these same positions, and if six persons are playing each will again occupy one of these several positions. The players may alternate in firing from the opposite sides of the board, and will count according to positions reached by the disk discharged. If, in the course of the game, one of the positions 12 or 13 becomes covered, the player playing from the same cannot count any further until the end of the game. The blocks 8 may be placed in such a position as in the judgment of the player on the two sides will serveas the best protection.
When the game is not in use it may be folded and the line on which it. is folded is so located that the two battlements 11 will telescope with one another, so that the entire game will occupy as small a position as possible.
While I have described my invention above in detail, I wish it to be understood that many changes may be made therein without departing from thespirit of my invention.
. I claim:
1. In a game, a base board having on its surface portions depicting in contour a battlefield and fortifications of such battlefield.
2. In a game, a base board having its surface shaped to represent in contour the two sides of a battlefield, portions of such surface having the contour of fortifications of such two sides of the battlefield.
8. In a game, a base board having on its surface portions depicting in contour a battlefield and fortifications of such battlefield, and a base position from which missiles are to be discharged.
l. In a game, a base board having on its surface opposing portions shaped to represent fortifications of the two sides of a battlefield, and base position from which a missile is to be discharged respectively toward said opposite parts.
' 5. In a game, a base board having on its surface portions representing, in outline, component parts of a battlefield, and base positions from which a missile is to: be discharged, said component parts affording objectives of varying difliculty for said missiles.
6. In a game, a baseboard having on its surface portions representing opposing trenches and base positions from which missiles are to be discharged toward :said trenches.
7. In a game, a base board having on its surface portions representing opposing trenches and base positions from which missiles are .to be discharged toward said trenches, and obstructions located between each of said trenches and the opposing base positions.
8. In a game, a-baseboard having .on its surface portions representing opposing trenches and base positions from which missiles are to be discharged toward "said trenches, and obstructions located between each of said trenches and the. opposing base positions, said obstructions being adjustable in position.
.9. In a game, a its surface portions representing opposing trenches and base positions'from which misbase board having on siles are to be discharged toward said trenches, and other component parts of. the battlefield disposed adjacent said: trenches,
and forming objectives of varying difliculty trench and an: obstruction located adjacent said trench.
12. In a game, a baseboard having. on
its surface a portion shaped to represent a v trench and a base position from which missiles are to be discharged toward said trench and an obstruction located adjacent said trench, said obstruction being movable in position. 7 I
18. Ina game, a baseboard having its surface irregularly. shaped to provide objectives of varying degrees of difficulty, and a base position from which missiles are .to be fired at said objectives.
14:. In a game, a base board having on its surface portions shaped to re resent, in outline, component parts of aattlefield, and base positions from which a missile is to be discharged, said component parts affording objectives of varying difficulty for said missiles. V 7 V 15. In a, game, a base board. having on'its surface portions shaped .to represent opposing trenches and basejpositions from which missiles are to be discharged toward missiles are to be fired respectively at said 10 said trenches, and other component parts groups of objectives. of the battlefield disposed adjacent said In testimony that I claim the foregoing grerimhles, and foaming (ibjectives of varying I have hereunto set my hand. 5 i cu ty or sai missi cs.
16. In a game,v a base board having its WILLARD STRAIGHT surface irregularly shaped to provide two Witnesses: groups of objectives of varying degrees of A. W. FIEDLER, difiiculty, and base positions from which LOUIS D. FRoEmcK.
