Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JULIUS H. STEAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vorcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented cervery little space being well adapted for use by travelers and persons moving froln place to place. A further object is to provide a device having white and red lights adapted to be connected to an electric circuit, means being provided for automatically controlling the circuit of the different lights so as to illuminate the white lights when the device is closed, and break the circuit of the white lights and illuminate the red light i when the device is open thuspermitting it to be used as a dark lantern. A further object is to provide a device having a base and a foldable body mounted thereon, this base and body comprising a light casing, the ends and sides of the body being foldable into the base so as to be contained thereby. A further object is to provide a printing frame carried by the foldable body and hingedly secured thereto so as to fold into the base, this frame having a cover hingedly secured thereto. A still further object is to provide means controlled by the cover of the framefor automatically controlling the light circuits. Further objects will appear from the detailed description:

-The device is provided with a. box-like base 1 which is cut away at each end to provide a recess 2. At each end of the base 1 is mounted a foldable member composed of the two hingedly connected sections 3 and 4, these sections being secured together at their adjacent edges by the hinges 5 which are mounted to permit members 3 and 4 to fold inwardly and downwardly. Member 3 is hingedly secured, at its lower edge, to the upper edge of the end of base 1 by hinges 6, these hinges being so disposed as to permit member 3 to fold downwardly and inwardly into the base 1. The members 3 and 4 correspond in length to the recess 2 and are of such thickness that, when folded together, the upper surface of member 4 will be flush with the upper edge of base 1, these members being thus contained within the base, as in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
A printing frame 7 ishingedly secured at its ends tothe upper edges of sections 4 by means of hinges 8. mounted as to permit sections 4 to fold inward and upward at the same time that sections 3 fold inward and downward, so as to bring these two sections into parallelism with each other. Frame 7 is provided with an inner rabbet 9 which provides an inner peripheral shoulder 10. This shoulder is adapted to support a plate of glass or other suitable transparent medium upon which may be placed the film and the sensitized paper for printing purposes. The members 3 and 4 constitute the ends of the light casing. One side of this case is closed by a covering 11 of red fabric, the other side being closed by a covering 12 of black fabric, these coverings being secured to the sides of the end members composed of sections 3 and 4 and cooperating therewith and with base 1, to the inner faces of the sides of which the lower portions of these coverings are also secured, to provide a light casing which is entirely closed except at its upper end. 6 Mounted within base 1 and adjacent each corner thereof, is secured a wire spring 13 provided with one onmore coils and having its upper arm pressln against the inner face of end section 3. %hese springs act to normally force the end sections'3 upward and outward thus extending the body portion of the light casing. An eye 14 is secured in member 3 and projects inwardly from the inner face thereof. This eye is adapted to 15 receive a locking finger 15 formed at the upper end of a rectangular or L-shaped catch 16 carried by a push button 17 slidable through the end of base 1. A tension spring 18 is mounted about the horizontal arm of member 16 having its inner end secured thereto and its outer end secured to the end of the base. This tension spring acts 4 to normally hold member 16 outward. When the body of the light casing is in folded condition, eye 14 is in such position as to be engaged by lock finger 15 thus securing end sections 3 in lowered position and maintaining the body of the light casing folded within the base 1. By pressin the 80 push buttons 17 inwardly the lower en sections 3 will be released and the springs 13 will act to extend or raisethe bodv of the light casing as previously described.
A light socket 19 is secured on the inner 815 face of one end of base 1 at the center thereof. This socket receives a red globe or light 20 mounted therein in the usual manner. At the other end of the base 1 are mounted two sockets 21 and 22 in which are secured the lights 23 and 24, these lights being transparent or white. A plug member 25 is secured in one end of the base 1. This plug member cooperates with a member 26 provided with a cord 27 t0 electrically connect member 25 to a, source of supply of electrical energy. A plug member 28 similar to member 26 is mounted in the inner end of member 25. A wire 29 has one end connected to one pole of plug other end of this wire being connected to one pole of socket 19. The other pole of socket 19 is connected by a lead 30 to the lower leaf of one of the bin es 6 at the end of the base on which plug 19 is secured. The I upper leaf of this hinge is connected by a strip 31 of copper to the lower leaf of hinge 5, the upper leaf of this latter hinge being connected by a strip 32 of copper to one of the hinges 8. The upper leaf of this hinge is electrically connected by screws 33 to the inner leaf 37 of one of the'hinges 34 which hingedly secure one end of cover 35 for the printing frame 7 to one end of the frame, the screws 33 being passed through the end of frame 7 and through the supermember 28, the
posed leaves of hinges 8 and 34. A copper strip 36 is secured at one end to leaf 37 of hinge 34, thisstrip being mounted on the upper face of the end bar 38 of frame 7. The inner end of strip 36 is'bent up to form a contact member 39 which projects above one end of a vertical groove 40 formed at the center of bar 38. A strip 41 similar to strip 36 is mounted on end bar 38 and is provided with a contact member 42 which projects above the other end of groove 40, the outer end of this latter strip being electrically connected to lower leaf 37 of the other hinge 34. A contact plate 43 is mounted in groove 40 and is provided at its longitudinal center with a pin 44 secured to the same. The ends of this plate are bent up to form contact members adapted to engage the members 39 and 42 when the plate is raised so as to electrically connect strips 36 and 41. A coil expansion spring 45 is mounted about the pin 44 beneath plate 43. This spring acts to normally hold the plate in raised position. The pin 44 is of such length that, when the cover 35 is in lowered or closed position, it will engage the pin so as to force the plate 43 downward out of contact with members 39 and 42, as in Fig. 8 of the drawings. When the cover is raised, pin 44 will be released and the plate will be raised so as to establish electrical connection between strips 36 and 41. The lower leaf 37, of the other hinge 34 is electrically connected to the other hinge 8 by screws 33, and this other leaf 8 is connected by a strip 46 to the upper leaf of the other hinge 5 the lower leaf of which is connected by a strip 47 to the upper leaf of the other hinge 6. .The lower leaf of this latter hinge is connected by. a wire 48 to the lower leaf of the corresponding hinge 6 at'the other end of the casing, which lower leaf is connected by a lead 49 to the other pole of socket member 28. By this arrangement, the red light 20 is connected in series with the circuit so as to be illuminated when the cover 35 for the printing frame 7 is raised. When this cover is lowered, the circuit of light 20 will be automatically broken in the manner previously described.
At the other end of the casing from light 20, one of the hinges 6 is connected by a copper strip 31' to the lower leaf ofhinge 5 the upper leaf of which is connected by a copper strip 32 to hinge 8. This hinge is electrically connected to a copper strip 50 secured on the upper face of end bar 38 of frame 7. This end bar is provided, in its outer face, with a vertical oove 51, and the inner end portion of strlp 50 is turned downwardly into this groove to provide a contact and gripping member 52. A strip 53 similar to strip 50 is secured to bar 38 at the other side of groove 51 and has its inner end portion turned downwardly into this groove to provide a contact and gripconnected to the lower leaf of binge 6 adj acent socket 21 and to one pole of this socket, a lead 55 being connected to the same pole of socket 21 and to one pole of socket 22. A lead 56 is connected to the other pole of socket 22 and to the other pole of socket 21, this lead then being continued to form a supplemental lead 56 the other end of which is connected to the same pole of socket member 28 as lead 29. Cover 35 is provided at the, center of its free or front edge with a plate 54 provided with a depending lug 55. This lug is of such size as to fit snugly between the members 52 and 52 of strips 50 and 53, respectively, so as to be tightly gripped thereby frictionally. The lu 55 may be made of brass or any other suitable electric-conducting material. When the cover 35 is in closed position, the lug 55 serves to electrically connect strips 50 and 53, the members 52 and 52 of these strips also acting to releasably secure the cover in closed position.
When the cover is losed, the circuit of the red light 20 is broken, and the circuit of the white lights 23 and 24 is closed. When this takes place, the current will flow from the positive pole of socket member 28 to lead 54, to one pole of socket member2l through lead 54, where the current will divide, one part of the current flowing through lamp 23, and lead 56 to the other ole of socket member 28, the other part 0 this current flowing through lead 55 to one pole of socket 22, through light 24 to the other pole of this socket, through lead 56, and lead 56" to the negative pole of socket member 28. By this arrangement, the lights 23 and 24 are connected in multiple thus insuring a uniform distribution of light during the printingoperation. A metallic plate 57 is secured to the inner face of the-bottom 1 of base 1. This plate is highly olished to provide a reflector for directing the light rays upward against the under face of the transparent supporting medium carried by printing frame 7 In using this device, the cover 35 is raised thus automatically turning on or illuminating the red light 20. The film and the sensitized paper may then be properly placed on the glass mounted in the frame 7 for supporting the same. Due to the fact that the red light 20 is illuminated there is no danger'of injury to the sensitized paper during this op eration, which may therefore be performed at leisure thus insuring accuracy in placing of the film on the paper. After this has been done, the cover 35 is then lowered thus automatically turning off the red light and illu- .minating the white lights 23 and 24 so as to reproduce the image of the film on the paper. When the printing operation is completed, the cover 35 may be raised thus shutting off the white lights and again turning on the red lights. In the event that the printing operation is not completed, the reproduction may be examined after which the cover may again be lowered and the printing operation completed. When the reproduction is removed from the printing frame, the red light will be turned on, thus providing a red or dark lantern for use in the subsequent Washing of the reproduction.
A pane of glass 58 is secured in one of the endsections4for observation purposes. Due to the fact that the side cover 11 is made from red fabric, the reproduction being printed may be readily examined through the glass 58 by natural light, the red glow caused by cover 11 being sufiicient to preventinjury to the sensitized paper from the natural light rays.
, This device is comparatively simple and is well adapted for use by travelers as it may be folded so as to occupy but very little space. Also, in addition to providing means for printing the pictures, it is well adapted for use as a red or dark lantern in the subsequent washing operation of the reproduction.
What I claim is:
1. In photographic printing devices, a, light casing comprising a box-like base and a body portion hingedly connected thereto at its ends, said body having foldable ends and sides and being adapted to fit within the upperportion of the base when in folded condition. a printing frame carried by the body of the casing at the upper end thereof 7 cure the cover in closed position.
2. In photographic printing devices, a I
light casing comprising a box-like base and a body portion having flexible sides and foldable ends each composed of two hingedly connected sections secured to the ends of said base so as to be foldable downwardly and inwardly into the upper portion of the same, a printing frame carried by the body at thetop thereof and having its ends hingedly secured to the ends of the body of said light casing, and a cover hingedly secured at one end to said printing frame.

In photographic printing devices, a light casing comprising a box-like base adapted to support lights mounted within the same and a body portion having flexible sides and foldable ends each composed of two hingedly connected sections secured to the ends of said base so as to be foldable downwardly and inwardly into the upper portion of the same into substantially horizontal position, a printing frame carried by the body at the top thereof and having its ends hingedly secured to the ends of the body of said light casing, and a cover hingv edly secured at one end to said printing frame.
4. In photographic printing devices, a light casing comprising a box-like base adapted to support lights mounted within the same and a body portion having flexible sides and foldable ends each composed of two hingedly connected sections secured to the ends of said base so as to be foldable downwardly and inwardly into the upper portion of the same into substantially horizontal position, a printing frame carried by the body at the top thereof and having its ends hingedly secured to the ends of the body of said light casing, means for normally holding the ends of said body portion in extended position, and means for releasably securing said ends of the body in lowered posltion so as to extend inwardly above the base 1n spaced parallel relation to the bottom of the same.

foldable ends each composed of two hingedly connected sections secured to the ends of said base s0 as to be foldable downwardly tion so as to extend in spaced parallel rela- 4 tion to the bottom of said base, said securing means being operable exteriorly of the easing so as to release the ends and to permit said body to be extended.
6. In photographic printing devices, a light casing comprising a box-like base and a body portion having flexible sides and foldable ends hingedly ecured to the ends of said base so as to be foldable downwardly and inwardly into the upper portion of the same into substantially horizontal position, a printing frame carried by the body at the upper end thereof and having its ends hingedly secured at one end to one end of said printing frame, said cover serving to close the printing frame when in lowered position, and means for releasably securing the ends of the body of the casing in lowered position extending in parallel spaced relation to the bottom of said base.
