To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES H. MANN, J12, citizen of the United States, residing at Little Rock, in the county of Pulaski and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vending- Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to vending machines and more particularly to certain improvements in a vending machine of that general character shown and described in Patent No. 1,217,616 issued to me February 27, 191?. a

It is the primary object of the present invention to provide a connnon locking means for the case lid or cover affording access to the magazine and for the coin receiving cup.

It is also an important object of the invention to provide locking means for the coin cup which is entirely contained within the body of the case and to which access cannot be had from the exterior thereof whereby the removal of the coin cup and rifling of its contents by unauthorized persons is effectually prevented.

And it is a further general object of the invention to improve the patented machine as above stated, and yet maintain the very compact arrangen'lent of the elements as disclosed in the original patent and without increasing the manufacturing cost of the machine to an appreciable extent.

Vith the above and other objects in view my invention consists in the improved combination, construction and relative arrangement of the several parts as" will be hereinafter more fully described, subsequently claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and wherein Figure l is an elevation with the front of the case removed and certain of the parts in section, showing the case lid and the coin cup in their, locked positions.

Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the magazine case removed and showing in dotted lines, the released position of the locking lever.

Fig. 3 is a detail horizontal section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.

The machine as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, is particularly designed :tor use in railway cars, theaters, and like places, the machine being mounted between the car windows, or on the backs of the seats. It is therefore essential that the parts of the machine shall be very compactly arranged so that the machine as a whole will be of small. dimensions, and will occupy but little space. And it is likewise very desir able, in the use of vending machines in such places that access may be quickly had to the interior of the machine for charging the same with the gum or other commodity and that the coins may be readily removed. This result is attained by means of the present invention, wherein the separate key-actuated lock for the coin cup with which such machines are usually equipped, is eliminated and the coin cup at the bottom of the case and the top or lid at the upper end of the case are simultaneously lockedby the manipulation of a single key. The particular mechanism whereby this end is accomplished, I will now proceed to describe in detail.

In the accompanying drawings, 5 designates the outer case of the machine which includes a body and a removable front plate (not shown). At its upper end, the bodv of the case is equipped with a top or cover 7 hinged to the upper edge'of its rear wall.-

Within the body'of themachine case 5 a magazine case designated generally by the numeral 9 is arranged. This case is also stamped from a sheet metal plate and in, cludes the longitudinally extending side walls 10 which are slightly spaced from the opposed side walls of the outer case 5. Upon the rear wall of the magazine case. S the coin controlled article delivery mechanism is mounted. The specific construction and mounting of the several parts of this mechanism has been made the subject matter of another applicatlon for patent, and it will not therefore be herein further dc scribed in detail. It will suflice to state that the body of the magazine case'9 is provided at its lower end with a tray or pan indicated at 11 into which the articles are delivered. This pan extends substantially one-half the depth of the machine case 5, and the operating lever 12 for the article delivery mechanism which is mounted upon the rear 1,278,1&6

wall of the magazine case, projects downwardly below the pan 11 at one end thereof as clearly shown in Fig. 1.

The coins. of course are received between the front and rear walls 1s; and 15 and are collected upon the bottom wall 16. This bottom wall at its ends is formed with upturned flanges 17 for engagement over the side walls of the outer case 5 at their lower ends. The bottom wall 16 ot' the cup is further provided ad acent one end thereof with a notch or recess to accommodate the operating rod or lever 12. At the relatively opposite end of the cup, the front wall ll has an zuz ularly disposed lug 18 formed thereon, said lug being located in the plane of the end wall of the cup and above the same to thereby provide a recess or notch indicated at l9 Referring now to Fig. 2 of the drawings, it will be noted that the pan or tray 11 is formed on the lower edge of a vertically disposed plate 20 which extends between the side walls 01 the magazine case 9 below the delivery plate "21 which constitutes the b0ttom of the magazine. This delivery plate is mounted for rocking or tilting movement upon a rod or shaft the ends of which extend through apertures in the side walls oi the magazine case 9. llpon one or the projecting ends of this rod a lever 23 is loosely mounted for pivotal movement. The lever extends vertically between one side wall of the outer case 5 of the machine and the opposed side wall of the magazine case 9. The lower end or" this lever is reduced in width as indicated at 2% and is formed with an angular terminal lug extending inwardly through a slot or opening 26 in the side wall of the magazine case. The lever 23 at its upper end is formed with a laterally and forwardly extending angularly disposed flange 2?. This flan fe extends inwardly over the upper end of the side wall of the case 9, and in spaced relation thereto.

In operation, after the i .achine has been charged or loaded *ith the gum or other commodity, the coin cup inserted upwardly into the lower end of the magazine case 9 between the side walls thereol and with the front wall llof said. cup in contact with the rear face of the vertically disposed wall 20 of the pan or tray 11. The flanges 17 at the ends of the cup will trictionally engage the side walls of the case 5 and the recess 19 will be disposed in registering re lation with the slot 26 in the side wall of the magazine case 9. It will be understood that the coin cup can only be thus inserted. when the lever is disposed in the dotted line position seen in Fig. 2. The operator then engages the flange 27 on the upper end oi? said lever with the thumb and forces the same rearwardly, thus rocking the lever and moving the lug 25 on the lower end thereof into the slot 19 and beneath the lug 18 on the wall of the coin cup. Finally, the lid or cover '7 of the case is closed and a key inserted in the lock 8. The lock bolt indicated at 8 when projected to its locked position will engage at its outer end beneath the tlange 2? on the upper end of the lever 23. It will thus be apparent that the lid or cover I is securely locked and held in its closed position, and the coin cup 13 is likewise locked within the lower end of the case. In other words the lever 23 constitutes a common keeper element which coacts with means on the coin cup and with the bolt. 01 the locl; 8 to lock the case lid or cover and the cup against displacement. It will accordingly be seen that my invention obviates the necessity equip )ing the coin cup with a separate key-actuated lock. The machine may. therefore, be recharged and the coins removed from the cup and the machine ag in locked with the loss ot but little time. This saving in time is an important factor when the large number at machines with which a single railway coach may he eguipped considered.

From the it'oregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings the construction, operation and several advantages ot the present invention will be clearly and tally understood. Itv will be seen that by a very simple addition to the machine as illustrated in my prior patent hereinbetore referred to, I have materially enhanced the utility and serviceability of the original machine. The keeper or locking lever for the coin cup is entirely contained within the outer case 5 so that access cannot by any possibility be had thereto and the lower end of said leer displaced in such manner as to release the coin cup. The cup cannot therelore be removed and the coins extracted by unauthorized parties. Of course, the lock 8 will be of an especial construction, requiring a key of peculiar form for its operation. However, even if one succeeded in operat ng the lock so that the lid or core would be opened, the attempt to rille the coin cup would probably still be irustrated 0 'ing to the fact that the person bein tin-acquainted with the construction of the machine would not properly manipulate the le er 23 to release the coin cup. There fore after further :tutile attempts to remove the cup he would probably desist in his efforts. As the several parts of the improvement ca be readily stamped from sheet metal it will be appreciated that the additional expense involved in the manufacture of the machine as shown in my priorpatent,

will be comparatively small. It is also to be observed that the dimensions of the original machine remain practically the same so that the machine equipped with the improved lock will occupy but little space, thus rendering the machine particularly desirable for such uses as I have heretofore mentioned.

lVhile I have herein shown and described the preferred form, construction and relative arrangement of the various parts of the device, it is to be'understood that the same are susceptible of considerable modification therein and I, therefore, reserve the provision of adopting such legitimate changes as may be clearly embodied withinthe spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a vending machine, a case, a lid or cover for the upper end of the case equipped with a lock, a coin cup, and a common keeper element to coact with the coin cup and with the lock to lock the lid or coverand the coin cup against movement relative to the machine case.

2. In a vending machine, a case, a lid or cover for the upper end of the case equipped with a look, a coin cup, and means wholly disposed within said case and adapted to coact with the lock on the lid or cover and with said coin cup to lock said lid and the cup against movement relative to the machine case.

In a vending machine, a case having a closure, a coin cup, and means common to both the closure and the coin cup and inaclock therefor, a magazine case arranged' within the outer case and having its side walls spaced from the opposed walls of the outer case, a coin cup removably engaged between the side walls of the magazine case Copies of this patent may be obtained for .outer case, a coin cup removably engaged between the side walls of the magazine case at their lower ends, and a pivoted lever arranged between one side wall of the outer case and the opposed wall of the magazine case and having terminal means to respectively coact with the lock for the lid and with said coin cup to lock said lid and coin cup against movement.

8. In a vending machine, a case, a rectilinearly movable 'coin cup mounted in said case, a manually operable locking element inaccessible from the exterior of the case having means on one end to coact with the coin cup and lockthe same against movement with respect to the case, and means coacting with the other end ofsaid element to hold the same against movement from its locking position.

9. In a vending machine, a case, a coin cup movably mounted within the case, a pivoted lever wholly contained within said case and having means on one end to coact with the coin cup and lock said cup against movement with respect to the case, and means 00- acting with the opposite end of said lever to hold said lever against movement from its locking position.

10. Ina vending machine, an outer case having a lid or cover, a magazine case disposed within the outer case, a coin cup removably engaged in the magazine case, and means on the magazine case to coact with said cup and with means on said lid to thereby lock the cup against removal and lock the lid in its closed position. i

11. In a vending machine, an outer case having a lid or cover, a magazine case arranged within the outer case, a coin cupl adapted to be disposed in one end of the magazine case, and a lever carried by the magazine case having means on one end to coact with the coin cup and lock said cup against removal, and having means on its other end to coact with means on the lid and lock said lid in its closed position.
