Description

M. H: SPEELMAN. CIGAR'LIIGHTER. APPLICATION FILED WW5, 1916 l ,272,86., Patented July 16, 1918 MAXI'MILLIAN H. srlnmvmn, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
CIGAR-LIGHTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 5, 1916. Serial No. 95,571.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. MAXIMILLIAN H. SPIELMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of borough of Manhattan, county, city, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Lighters, of which the following is a description in such lull, clear,
and exact terms as will enable any person skilled in the art to which it pertains to makeand use the same.
My invention relates to improvements-in cigar lighters and other devices which are supplied with an electrical current through a flexible cable running in and out from a reel through parts of which the electrical circuit is passed.
In such devicesditiiculty has been experienced from short circuiting due to the Wearing away of the insulation of the flexible electrical cable. Such short circuits result in danger from fires not to speak of complete inoperativeness of the device and my invention involves various improvements which will, be fully set forth hereinafter by which these short circuits safeguarded against.
The invention involves other features all of which will be fully set forth hereinafter and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the reel, device.
. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. l.
Figs. 4 and 5 are detailed views showing the operation of the automatic circuit breaking device. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary elevation showing the reel adjusting arbor.
Fig. 7 is a detailed section showing a modification of the circuit breaker device.
Fig. 8 is a detailed section showing a modification of the switch to the reel.
The invention is here illustrated in connection with an incandescent cigar lighting device 10 but it should be understood that.
it, is applicable to any other electrical device parts are contained and which is adapted to be fastened to any suitable stationary part. This box has spring holder fingers 14; for the llghtmg device 10 and a push button .15 which is adapted to be engaged by the lighting device when the lighting device is held by the fingers 14l thereby moving the push button back into the case.
The terminals of the cable 11 are in electrical connection respectively with disks 16 and 17 on the reel and said disks, of course, are insulated from each other. One branch of the circuit passes oii to a binding post, 18 by a spring arm 19 fastened to the binding post 18 at its rear end and carrying at its forward end an l..-shaped cont-act finger 20 one arm of which is engaged by the button 15 and the other arm of which is normally in contact with the disk 17 thereby com- But when the lighter 10 is placed in posi tion between the spring fingers 14 it pushes back the button 15 this button being in engagement with the other arm of the L- shap'ed cont-act finger 20. pushes the same inward and moves the other arm thereof away from the disk'17 and out of contact therewith thus breaking the circuit. .The result is that the circuit is broken and the cable or conducting wires 11 are not charged with the current at all times during which thejlighting device 10 is in inactive position between the fingers 14:. Hence when the device is not in use the circuit is broken and the danger of short circuits through defective insulation is avoided.
It is desirable, however, to reduce this danger of short circuiting to the uttermost minimum and in doing this I provide a spring finger 22 which carries the current of the second binding post 23 with a pcculiar circuit breaker acting against the flange 16 of the reel. This circuit breaker is shown in det il in Figs. A and 5. The
