COMBINED BOWL-HANGER AND SOCKET-SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters ltatent.
Application filed February 20, 1918. Serial No. 218,191.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWIN L. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at the borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Combined Bowl-Hanger and Socket-Support, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates primarily to lighting iiXt-ures of the indirect lighting character, and particularly to means for support ing the bowls and sockets in such fixtures, in which the bowls are not drilled with holes for the attachment of the hangers or socket supports, and it consists in providing a combined bowl hanger and socket support which may be clamped to bowls of various shapes and thickness with great facility.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved device complete.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the bowl hanger member.
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the socket supporting member.
Fig. 4c is a side elevation showing this de vice connected to a bowl, the latter being in section, and
Fig. 5 is a similar view showing a slight modification in the shape of hanger member and bowl.
Similar reference characters indicate like parts throughout the several figures.
10, indicates the bowl hanger member, and 11 the socket supporting member.
These members are each preferably formed from one piece of flat metal, and while they may be cast, I prefer that comparatively thin metal be employed and bent to the desired shape so as to possess a certain degree of resiliency by which the strain upon the glassware will be lessened in the member contacting therewith.
The member 10, is of a shape to fit over the rim of a bowl 12, while its inturned forward end 13, fits under the flange 14:, of the bowl when the same is of a shape illustrated in Fig. 4, or where the bowl has only an out-turned lip as in Fig. 5, the end of the hanger may be bent at a lesser angle and bear against the outer surface of the bowl as shown in such figure.
The other end of the member 10, is bent downwardly a predetermined distance, and then upwardly, forming a recess 15, at this point, above which the metal is preferably bent to form a hook 16, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4:, or it may extend upwardly in a straight or inclined direction with a hole bored near its upper end for the reception ofa hook or end link 18, of a chain 19, as shown in Fig. 5.
Alined threaded holes 20, are provided through the metal at both sides of the recess 15, for the reception of. a binding screw 21,
The member 11, has an enlargement 22, at its upper end, the center of which is cut out forming anopening 23, between which and the top edges there is a hole 24;, which may be threaded if desired, but this is not necessary, as it is preferably a smooth bore. The lower end of the member 11, is provided with a hollow exteriorly threaded stud 25, for the attachment of a lamp socket.
In assembling the parts, the book 16, on the member 10, is passed through the opening 23 in the member 11, and the upper end of this member is then drawn down into the recess 15, bringing the hole 24, in register with the threaded holes 20, in the member 10, after which the binding screw 21, is inserted, securely fastening the member 11, within said recess. The top ofthe opening 23, is preferably cut in a straight line which seats upon the bottom of the recess 15, pre- IZenting any lateral movement of this mem- My invention provides a combined bowl hanger and socket support which may be attached to or removed from bowls of various shapes and thickness with great facility. The screw 21, performs the double function of retaining the socket support in place, and clamping the combined device to a bowl.
I claim as my invention:
1. A device of the character described, comprising a member formed from one piece of flat metal having a substantially horizontal portion adapted to rest upon the top surface of a bowl flange, its forward end being bent to conform to the outer edge of said flange and extend under the same, the rear end of said member being bent downwardly and then upwardly forming a recess and provided with alined threaded holes in said bends, the upper end of such portion being formed to receive a hook or link of a chain, another member formed of a flat piece of metal provided at its lower end with a stud to receive a lamp socket,

and having its upper end fitted within said recess in the other member and provided with a hole registering with said threaded holes in such member, and a screw tpassing through said holes by means of which said first t member is clamped to the bowl and said second 'niemb'er held in position. 2. A device of the character described, comprising a member formed from one piece of flat metal having a horizontal portion adapted to rest upon the top surface of a bowlfiange,-itsforward end being bent to conform to'theouter edge of saidfiange' and extendunderthe same, the rear end of I said member being bent downwardly and then upwardly forming a recess and provided with alined threaded holes in said bends, the upper end of said portion being formed to receive a hook or link of a chain, anotherm'ember formed of a flatpiece of metaljprovided at its lower end with a stud to recelve a lamp socket, and'at its upper end with an opening throughwhich the rear end-of the-first member may be passed, the top-of said opening being cut in a straight line to seat upon=thebott0m of said recess, said second member being fitted within'said recess and provided with a holeregistering with said threaded holes in thefir'st'memher, and a screw passing through said holes by means of whichsaid first member is clamped to the bowl and said second memer held in position.
In a lighting fixture, the combination ofaabowl provided with a flange having the outer edge of the flange and extend under the same,:its rear end being bent downwardly andthen upwardly forming a recess andjprovid'ed with alinedthreaded holes in saidbends, a member formed of a llat piece of metal provided at its lower end with astud to receive a lamp socket and having its upper end fitted within said recess in the hangeriand provided with a hole registering with said threaded holes in said hanger, a screw passing through said'holes by means of which said hanger is clamped tothe bowl and said member held in posi tion, and a supportingehain connected with said hanger.
Signed by me this 6th day of February, 1918.
