ENVELOP MOISTENER AND SEALER.
. Z all 'wkom z't may concern.- Be it known that I, JOHN A. h/Li'1HEi;s, a
subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Grenfell, Province of Saskatchewan, Canada,'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in .Envelop Moisteners and Sealers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to' which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to an envelop moistener and sealer and has for its pensive in the cost of manufacture, thereby rendering the same commercially desirable. With the above and other objects in view which will hereinafter appear as the description continues, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, comblnation and formation of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Inthe accompanying drawings has been shown the simple and preferred form of the t invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details herein exhibited, but the right is hereby reserved to any changes, alterations or modifications to which re course may be had that come within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing the efliciency of the same.
Referring In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the de vice embodying the present invention as applied to use;
Fig. 2 isa side elevation of the same; and,
Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section.
now more particularly to the accompanying drawings wherein like. and corresponding parts are designated by similar reference characters throughout the several views.
The device forming the subject matter of the present invention comprises a U-shaped PatenteclOot 2, 1917.
Application filed March 9, 1917. Serial No. 153,556.
frame 1 having j ournaled within its opposite ends a roller 2 and the transverse'bar of this frame has connected thereto a handle 3.
An elongated tank or reservoir. 4 isprovidcd, which is detachably connected to the frame 1 having mounted at its lower end a moistener which is adapted to rub vover the gummed flaps of envelops for moistening the same. Secured to theforward upper end of the tank 4 by means of the brackets 5 is a bar 6. One end of this bar 6 is adapted to project through an opening formed within the side bar 7 of the frame 1, whereas the opposite side bar 8 of the frame is provided with a slot 9 in which the opposite end of the rod 6 rests and a pivoted latch member 10 is carried by the bar 8 for retaining the rod 6 within the slot 9. Pivotally connected to the bar 7 is an L-shaped bracket 11 having a recess in its shorter arm in which is adapted to rest a lug 12 carried by the side wall of the tank 4. Also carried by the bar 7 is a leaf spring 13 normally resting upon the bracket 11, thereby providing a cushional support for the pivotally mounted tank 4.
Arranged within the tank 4 is a partition 14 dividing the same into two compartments, one of which indicated by the numeral 15 is for holding the water and the opposite compartment has a pair of rollers 16 journaled therein. Adapted to be wound upon the rollers 16 is a wick 17 or other suitable moistener which extends over the rounded lower portion 18 of the tank. These rollers 16 are provided with the handles 19 whereby the rollers may be turned in either direction. The partition 14 is provided with openings which are adapted to be closed by the slide valve 20 and this valve 20 has connected thereto a valve stem 21 which may be manually opened or closed. The tank 4 is also provided with an opening which is shown closed by means of the cap 22. By removing the cap 22 a suitable supply of water may be placed within the compartment 15 and by opening the valve 21 this water may be supplied to thewick 17 as better shown in Fig. 3.
In the operation of the device the operator grips the handle 3 and by forcing the device forward the roller 2 will open the gummed flap A of the envelop B and when the moistener comes in contact withthe gummed portion of the flap A the gum thereon will be properly moistened. By reversing the operation of the device and slightly raising a the frame 1 the moistener Will be raised out 7 of"contactwit'h the fiap' of the envelop and the roller? Will'pnll the flap Aback over upon the body portion vof the envelop B Where the flap Will adhere'to the envelop. It isobvious from the foregoing that the envelops 'may be moistened and sealed With this device Without touching the envelops" 10 With the hands and that a larger number of envelops'may be sealedin aa'short period of *time.
-Having=thus fully described my invention, --What I c laim'as-new and desire-to secure byi 5iLetters- Patent is: Y
' '1; Ima device of the ch'aracter described thecombinationof a supporting frame, of"
a 1 tan k pivot'ally' and *detachably connected to said; supporting-frame, a partition formed 2 Within said tank for dividing thesame into l 7 'tWO compartfments, a valve controlled "openset forth comprising in combination a U sh'apedframe, a-tank, means for pivotally and detachably connecting said tank Within,
said U-shaped' frame, a springactuated bracket carried by said-U-shaped frame and adapted-to restupon said tank, a moistener carried by the lower end of said tank and a handle carried by the medial portion of said U-shaped frame.
In Witness whereof-I have hereunto set my hand'at Grenfell aforesaid this 19th day 'of=February, A. D. 19 17.
