Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 2, 1917.
Application filedFebruary 23, 1917. Serial No. 150,575.
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Arcadia, county of Hamilton, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful. Operating-Table; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to like parts.
This invention relates to an operating table for animals and more specifically to a table on which to lay an animal to be operated upon, and means for'clamping and holding the animal in" elevated position whereby he will be easily accessible.
The main feature of this invention lies in the construction of a table for supporting an animal and elevating him off of the ground so that he could be easily worked on and also a clamping or holding means mounted on the top of the table in such a position that the animal may be readily and easily held. This is accomplished by means of a stationary body clamp and a movable clamp between which the animal is thrown. A foot operated mechanism is connected with the movable body clamp so that the operator. may clamp the animal with his foot while his hands are engaged in placing him.
The full nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the operating table. Fig. 2 is a plan view looking down thereon. Fig. 3 shows an end elevation of the operating table. Fig. 4 is a cross section through the upper portion of the table showing parts of the lower portion broken away. 7
In the drawings there is shown a table with legs 10 having cross braces 11 and top braces 12 secured thereon. Supported on the legs 10 there is a stationary top 13. Slidably mounted on the table top 13 there is a platform 14 adapted to be engaged at each end by the angle bars 15 which are secured on the table top. The under side of the platform is provided with laterally extending flanges 16 which engage and slide in the grooves 17 of the table top. This permits the platform to be laterally slidable back and forth on the table top and held thereon by the angle bars 15 and guided by the movement of the flanges 16.
Rigidly mounted on the edge of the table a top there are standards 18 extending upwardlytherefrom. Secured to said standards there is a clamping member 19 which is of a shape to conform as nearly as possible to the form of the animal. Secured to the sliding platform 14 and extending upwardly therefrom there are standards 20 to which is secured a similar clamping member 21 of substantially the same form and shape as the member 19, and mounted opposite to said member so that the animal may be placed between the members and be clamped therebv as will be hereinafterdescribed.
Secured to the sliding platform 14 there is a chain 22 which passes around a pulley 23 mounted on the table top as shown in Fig. 4. The other end of the chain 22 is full length of the table as shown in Fig.
one end thereof there is a foot lever 26 having a pedal on its outer end, to which is secured a rod 27 which is connected to one of the upper cross braces 12 through the spiral spring 28 for returning the foot lever to its upper position after having been operated. Mounted on one of the forward legs 10 on the inner side thereof there is a ratchet 29 in position to be engaged by the foot lever 26 for holding it in position while the ani mal is being operated upon.
The operation of the device is as follows:
The sliding member 21 is pulled back by hand so as to give sufficient room for an animal to be lifted up and placed between the members 19 and 21. The operator when the animal is finally placed presses down on the foot lever 26 with his foot and causes the sliding member 21 to move forward to en gage and clamp the animal against the mem ber 19. WVhen properly clamped the operator pushes the foot pedal sidewise so that it will engage the ratchet 29 and beheld in that position. The animal is then securely clamped so that any operation may be performed without violence from the animal.
The hand lever 24 and the foot lever 26 are projected outwardly from that side of the operating table upon which the movable 1. Rigidly connected to the rod 25 near 9 platform and clamping member carried therebyare located, so that when the. foot lever is disengaged from the ratchet 29 the natural expansion of the body of the animal will tend to move themovable clampingmember and platform away from the stationary clamping member and said movable clamping member will be moved to its full" open position when the animal is removed from the operating table, owing to the fact that the weight of the animal will be di rected against the movable clamping member as the animal islifted from thetable.
It will also be seen that the entire weight of the levers will be suspended from the supporting spring 28, thus permitting the movable clamping member to readily slide transversely over the surface of the stationary platform.
The invention claimed is; 1. An operating table comprising a, stationary platform, supporting bars at each end, of said platform, an animal clamping member fixed to said stationary platform, a movable platform adapted to slide over the stationary platform, guide members for re taining the s'lidingplatform in proper alinement with the stationary platform, a clamping member carried by. the movable platform adapted to cooperate with the clamping memberof the stationary platform a shaft rotatably mounted, the platform supporting bars, a lever fixed, at one end of said shaft and projecting outwardly from the side of the table having the 'movable platform and clamping member, chain connected at one end to said lever at a point between its ends, the opposite end of said chain being attached to the movable. platform, a pulley rotatably mounted on one ed'gcof the stationary platform over which said chain passes, a foot lever also fixed to one end of said shaft and projecting outwardly from the side of the table having the movable platform and clamping member, .a ratchet carried by one of the platform supports with which said foot lever engages to ho-l d the foot lever in its lowered position, and a spring controlled rod attached at one end to the foot lever and at its upper end to the upper portion of the platform support for returningsaid levers to their upward positions when, the foot lever is: released from the ratchet, without affecting the movement of: the movable platform.
2, In an animal'operating table, a stationary. platform, supporting legs for said platform, a movable platform slidably mounted above the stationary platform, means to hold the movable platform in alinement with the stationary platform, standards fixed to and extending upwardly from the stationary and movable platforms, horizontally disposed clamping members carried by said standards, and adapted to cooperate with eachother, said membGIS: being outwardly curvedfrom. end to end to conformsubstantially to the longitudinal shape of the animal, manually operated-means for. moving the clamping member andmovable platform toward the, stationary clamping member on the stationary platform and additional means to. look the movable platformand its clamping member against outward movemen fixed. my signature.
