Description

E. S. FREY & A. E. WRIGLEY.
TOOL HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 11, 1916.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERWIN S. FBEY AND ALBERT E. WRIGLEY, 0F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
TOOL-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 18, 191 *7.
Application filed May 11, 1916. Serial No. 96,894.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, 1, ERWIN S. FREY, and 2, ALBERT E. WRIGLEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in T ool-Holders; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to improvements in tool holders.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of tool holders and to provide a simple, practical and efficient tool holder of strong and durable construction equipped with means for securely and firmly holding the tool and capable of ready operation to lock and release the tool whereby the latter may be quickly placed inand removed from the tool holder so that there will be no delay in changing tools.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section illustrating a tool holder embodying the invention,
Fig. 2 is a detail view of the tool,
Fig. 3 is a similar view of the locking screw.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawing.
In the drawing in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, 1 designates a tool holder consisting of a body provided with a head 2 having a reduced extension 3 and provided with a slot 4 extending rearwardly from the front wall 5 of the head at the inner end. of the extension 3. The extension 3 has a fiat upper face 6 to receive a tool '7 which has a fiat lower face 8 and a reduced inner portion 9 extending into the slot .4. The extension 3 is provided in its upper face with a transverse groove 10 having a vertical rear wall 11 and an inclined front wall 12 which is undercut or dove-tailed to interlock with an inclined or dove-tailed front edge 13 of a rib 14 disposed transversely of the lower face 8 of the tool and formed integral therewith and slidably interlocked with the extension 3 of the head of the holder.
The tool is locked and firmly held in the slot and groove of the head of the holder by a locking screw 15 arranged at an inclina tion and disposed at an obtuse angle to the upper face 6 of the extension 3 and mounted in a threaded opening 16. The screw is provided at its inner engaging end with a cam 17 tapered downwardly and set at a slight angle and formed by a smooth eccentrically disposed tapered portion which fits in a recess 18 in the rear edge of the reduced portion 9 of the tool. The recess 18 has a curved wall 19 and a flat bottom wall 20 and the screw is adapted to be rotated approximately one-half a revolution to carry its cam portion engagement with the wall of the recess 18 and also with the bottom of the same. This forces the tool forwardly or outwardly to bind the dovetailed portion of the rib against the inclined or dove-tailed portion of the groove at the same time the flat end face 21 of the cam bears against the flat bottom of the recess and clamps the tool against the bottom of the slot. It will thus be seen that approximately one-half a revolution of the locking screw carries the cam to and from its locking position and that the tool may be instantly clamped and released. The screw is provided at its outer end with a polygonal wrench receiving portion 22 but any other suitable means may of course be employed for enabling the screw to be rotated to clamp and release the tool.
The engagement of the cam with the recess at the inner or rear edge of the tool positively locks the tool against lateral movement so that the tool cannot become displaced from the groove even when the screw the latter being provided with a transverse groove, a tool having a rib fitted in the groove, said tools being also extended into the slot and an inclined angularly disposed locking screw having a cam arranged to engage the tool and force the rib into tight engagement with the extension, said screw being also adapted to force the cam downwardlv against the tool to clamp the same against the head.
2. A device of the class described including a body provided with a head having an extension, said extension being provided with a transverse groove having a dovetailed front wall, a tool having a dove-tailed rib fitted in the said groove, said tool being also provided with a recess and an angularly disposed screw having a cam arranged to engage the recess to force the tool outwardly and downwardlv whereby the tool is locked against the head and the rib forced into interlocking engagement with the front wall of the groove.
A device of the class described including a body having a head provided with an extension and having a slot at the inner end thereof, said head being provided with a dove-tailed transverse groove, a tool having a reduced rear portion and fitted in the slot and provided with a bottom transveisely disposed dove-tailed rib slidably interlocked with the said groove, said reduced portion being also provided with a recess at the inner or rear edge and an inclined locking screw mounted. in the head and having a tapered eccentrically arranged portion fornr ing a cani'and arranged to engage in the recess of the tool for forcing the tool ont wardly and also downwardly and locking the tool against lateral movement.
In testimony whereof we ailix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
