BOX-OPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
. Patented Oct. 6, 1914.
Application filed May 15, 1914. Serial No. 838,835.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE HYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Salem, in the'county of Dent and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Openers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to woodworking tools and more specifically to box openers.
The object of my invention is to provide a device which is simple and durable in construction and which is rapid and eflicient in removing the covers from boxes. It performs its function in much less time than implements heretofore used for this purpose and in such manner that the boards of the box cover are not broken or rendered unfit for further use. A box opened with my device may be used again without the use of additional nails, because the nails are not bent or broken in the removal of the cover as is so often the case with the use of other devices.
()ther objects of this invention not at this time more particularly enumerated, will be clearly understood from the detailed description and drawings forming a part of this specification.
Furthermore, this invention consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts more particularly described in the following specification and embodied in the claim appended hereunto and forming a part of this application.
Referring now to the drawings, which are merely illustrative of my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation with a box shown in dotted outline to show the operative position of my box opener. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, while Fig. 3 is a perspective of the box opener in inoperative position.
. Referring further to the drawings, wherein similar reference characters designate similar parts throughout the respective views, 1 designates a vertically operated lever with a bifurcated end 2, to which is secured transversely thereof at 2 a relatively flat member 3 horizontally disposed in operative position and chisel shaped along its outer edge so that it may be readily forced beneath the cover of a box. Pivotally mounted at one end and at a certain point on said lever 1, so as to form a fulcrum therefor, is a downwardly extending rod 4, to the other end of which is pivotally mounted oppositely projecting arms 5', both of said arms being provided at'a certain-point near their extremity with perforations 6.
Two' oppositelyarranged grip members 7, which normally occupy a vertical position approximately at right angles to said member 3, are provided with roughened inner surfaces 7 adapted to grip the sides of a boxS. To the outside of said grip members and centrally disposed with respect to their length are riveted horizontally operated levers 9 which project inwardly toward each other to a point of engagement at the center of said oppositely arranged grip members 7 where the said levers are pivotally joined at 10, from which point each of said levers extends rearwardly and outwardly at an oblique angle from each other with respect to the pivotal point 10. Each of said levers 9 is passed through one of the perforations 6 of oppositely-projecting arms 5 from which point they are bent inwardly at an oblique angle toward each other for a certain distance, and thence rearwardly a distance equal to the length ofthe lever 1. The free end of the uppermost of said levers 9 is bent downwardly at 11 so that, if desired, it may be hooked to the opposite lever, thereby permitting the operator the free use of both hands in manipulating lever 1.
in operating my device, the levers 9 are opened so that the grip members 7 may engage with the sides' of a box, whereupon the levers are brought together so that the box is tightly held between said grip members. The lever 1, which has considerable play in its mountings, is then shoved forward so that the chisel edge of member 3 may be forced under the cover of the box. A downward pressure on lever 1 will then disengage the cover from the box at one end. The opposite end will then be opened in like manner.
Having now described and pointed out the new and useful features of my invention, 1 do not limit myself to the shape of certain parts where the shape is not essential, nor do I restrict myself to the exact details of construction shown and described, but mean and intend to claim all equivalents and variations thereof not departing in principle from my invention and falling within the purview of the appended claim.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a box opener, the combination of two box engaging members, said members roughcned 011 their inner surfaces, a horizontally movable lever fixed to each of said memhere, said levers pivotally mounted to each other in a manner adapted to close said members in engagement with the sides of a box a standard mounted upon said levers alever pivotally mounted on the opposite end 10 of said standard, and a chisel edged member fixed to the forward end of said lever approximately at right angles to said box engaging members.
In testimony whereof I aflix my slgnatni'e in presence of two wltnesses.
EUGENE HYER.
