To all 'whom it may cof/'merli Be it known that I, JOHN F. WVISE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Onawa, in the county of Monona and State of Iowa, have invented u new and useful Filter, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in filters, one object of the present invention, being the provision of a simple construction of filter adapted to be inserted within the bung hole of a barrel and constitutes a means for straining the dregs from vinegar or other liquid so as to prevent the receptacle for receiving such liquid, said filter being further provided with means for introduction with in the barrel to prevent the larger particles or dregs from entering the. inlet of the filtering member.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of Construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through the complete filter, the outlet valve being shown in elevation. Fig. 2 is al similaiviewv to Fig. 1 of a modified form.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a frusto-conical bung engaging member whose inner end is screw threaded for the insertion of the perforated sleeve or tube 3. When the present device is properly inserted within the bung of a barrel, the tube or sleeve 3 projects above the lower portion of the barrel and constitutes a means to prevent the larger particles or dregs from entering within the member 1. Disposed within the interiorly screw threaded lower end 4 of the member 1 is an exteriorly threaded sleeve 5, which carries the filter retaining and carrying member 6, there being disposed across and within the collar 5, the straining plate 7 while a large straining plate 8 is disposed to engage the lower peripheral edge of the member 6 so as to retain the filtering material 9 therewithin. The flange 10 is threaded upon the end of the member G so that the lower member 1l will be held in proper relative position thereto for maintaining the perforated plate 8 in proper posltlon. This plate 8 may be composed of wire screen or netting as may also the member 7 of the present device. The outlet member 11 of the filter is funnel shaped and is provided with the central outlet 12 for the reception of the controlling valve orv spigot 13.
ln order to provide a means to permit of the proper venting of the valve so as to permit of the steady flowing of the liquid into and through the present filtering device, a vent tube 14 carried within the filtering member, as clearly illustrated and extends above the upper end of the screening sleeve 3, said tube being of sufiicient length to be above the upper surface of the liquid within the barrel. The lower outlet end 15 of the venting tube is disposed exteriorly of the member 6.
By tapering the member 1, the present filter is adapted for use in connection with many sized bung holes of barrels, and is easilyf inserted and screwed in place by means of the shouldered portion 1 which is either hexagonal or of any irregular shape which will permit of the proper gripping by a wrench.
In the form shown in Fig. 2, a cylindrical filter member 15 is interposed between the members 6 and 11', the perforated disks 14 and 8 for holding the filtering material 9 being employed.

1. A filter, including a supporting member, a perforated sleeve disposed in the inlet end thereof and adapted to project above the bottom of the receptacle being emptied, a ltering chamber carried at the opposite end of the supporting member, and a Vent tube projecting through and above the per` forated tube.
2. A filter, including a tapered and hollow eXteriorly screw threaded supporting member, a perforated tube disposed in the reduced end thereof for projection above the bottom of the receptacle being drained` a filter material carrying casing insertible within the lower end of the supporting member and in communication therewith to receive the liquid passing through the tube and supporting member, and disposed to project through the supporting member and perforated tube, the lower outer end of said venting tube being exteriorly of the filter material carrying member.
