KEY FOR TYPE-WITING MACHINES.
lSpecification of Letters liatent.
rammed Nov. in, i915.
elimination med March 5, i910. serial No. 547,385.
To all whom may concern y h Be it known that I, NiLs H. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Keys for Type-Vriting Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enablev others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same.l i
This invention relates to typewriting inachines, and with regard to the more specific features thereof, to the character or finger kevs.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a simple and practical device of the above character that will be cheap to manufacture.
` Another object is to provide a. device of the above nature that will be efficient in' operation and not likely to get out of order or become detached from the key lever in use.
A further -object is to provide a device in which the character card may be rotated or straightened with relation to the other letter keys after the parts are assembled.
Other Objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly consists in the 1 features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope ofthe application of which will be indicated'in the following claims In the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown various possible embodiments of this inventiOn,--Figure l shows the various parts of the device separated, in order that their relation may be clearly understood; Fig. 2 is a sectional View, showing the parts assembled; Fig. 3 is a detail plan Vview of the cup; Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line .9o-4m of Fig. 3;.Fig. 5 is a detail view, showing the manner of securing the cup to the kev lever; and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of' the cup.
Similar reference characters refer to simi- Referring now`to this drawingin detail,
l denotes a key lever having at its forward end laterally projecting shoulders 2 and upwardly-projecting lugs 3 with a cut-away portion a between them: A key-cup 5 is provided with recesses 6 shaped to receive and closely fit the upwardly. extending lugs 3 when the parts are assembled, the lunderside' of the cup resting on the outwardly extending shoulders 2, thereby giving the same a firm support and preventing a backward' and forward tilting of the cup.
After the cup has been placed in firm position upon the, end of the key lever, the upwardly projecting lugs 3 are struck or cut as by means of a sharp-pointed instrument, p
so as to bend Vor swage the sides thereof outward over the upper surface of the bottom of the cup, as clearly shown lin Fig. 5, whereby thecup is securely riveted to the key leve-r. This key `cup is preferably stamped out of sheet brass by a single operation, and braces T are punched downwardly from the underside of the cup adapted to bea-r against the sides .of the key lever, when the parts are assembled, to prevent any lateral movement of the cup in use. These braces, interposed between the bottom of the cup and thesides of thekey lever, are preferably curved transversely as well as longitudinally, as shown in F ig. 6, thereby providing a very strong and compact construction. The curving of these braces also provides a relatively large opening, permitting the insertion of a sharp-pointed instrument diagonally beneath the cup to engage the pad to which the letter *card is secured,
, sothat the same may be, rotated 'relatively to the cup or straightened after the parts are assembled, or at a later time, should the card become displaced by usage, thus improving the workmanlike appearance and general efliciency of the machine.
A pad 8 kis placed in the bottom of the cup, to which may be permanently secured a letter card 9, above which is placed a piece of Celluloid, glass or other transparent material 10, so that the character may be clearly seen, and all these parts are securely held in position byv means of a cap 11, having a downwardly turned inner fiange 12, adapted to. t around the cup and wedge firmly thereon, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
,lt thusseen that this invention provides for a simple and practical device having a small number of parts, Which will be cheap to manufacture and easy to assemble and attaining, among others, the objects and possessing the advantages above set forth.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all inatter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
