Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 20, 1912.
Application filed October 10, 1911. Serial No. 653,932.
To all whom it may concern:
Be'it known that I, EDWARD H. IVESON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cohoes, in the county of Albany, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wrenches and more particularly to a locking attachment therefor.
The object of this invention is the provision of a lever which is pivoted to the handle of a wrench and is provided with means for engaging the adjusting nut of a movable aw for preventing its rotation.
Another object of this invention is the provision of an adjustment for wrenches adapted to lock the movable jaw against displacement which comprises a lever pivoted to the wrench handle and provided with a spring clip adapted to engage the adjusting nut'preventing the rotation thereof and which is of such construction that by its own resiliency it will retain the lever in its locking position.
A further object of this invention is to improve and simplify devices of this character rendering them comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and efiicient in use and readily operable.
With the above and other objects in view this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is side elevation of my improved adjustment applied to a wrench. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a detailed perspective view of the adjustment removed.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by similar characters of reference the numeral 10 designates generally a wrench which comprises a stock 11 having formed upon one end a stationary head 12 and having attached to its opposite end a handle 13. A sliding jaw 14 is located upon the stock 11 and is provided with the usual threaded opening 15 for engagement with the adjusting screw 16 on which is keyed adj acent its lower end the usual adjusting nut 17. A bearing lug 18 which supports one end of the screw 16 is bifurcated as at 19 to produce a pair of spaced ears 20 between which is pivoted a lever 21. The upper end of this lever 21 is secured to its inner side by a segmental spring clip 22 of a width substantially the same as the adjusting nut 17. The diameter of this segmental clip 22 is substantially the same as the diameter of the nut 17 when the clip is in its extended posit-ion but when the clip is removed from engagement with the nut, the terminals of the clip will be spaced apart a distance slightly less than the diameter of the nut to provide a means whereby when the same is forced into engagement with the nut the resiliency thereof will prevent its displacement and retain the lever 21 in its locked position. The ends of the clip 22 are rounded as at 23 to permit of its ready engagement with the said nut 17 The free extremity of the lever 21 is provided with a releasing finger 24 which serves to permit of the ready detachment of the clip 22 from said adjusting nut. When the clip 22 is forced into locking engagement with the adjusting nut the same will surround the said nut to such an extent that it will be impossible for the same to contact with any foreign object when the wrench is in use which would cause the rotation of the screw 16 and any undesired displacement of the jaw 14.
From the foregoing disclosures taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be apparent that a locking adjustment for wrenches is provided for which will fulfil all of the necessary requirements of such a device.
Having thus fully described this invention What I claim as new and desire to proteet by Letters Patent, is:
The combination with a wrench, of a lev'er pivoted thereto, a spring clip of segmental formation secured to the lever and adapted to surround the adjusting nut of the wrench and by this resiliency retain the I WVitnesses: lever in its looking position, and an oper- TI-I.
