To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. STED- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Zanesville, in the county of Maskingum and State of Ohio, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Shoe- Heels; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention in shoe heels.

One object of the invention is to provide a shoe heel having an improved construc tion and arrangement of cushion and means to guard and protect the same from wear and to provide an even, durable tread surface for the heel;

' Another and further object of the invention is in the provision of a heel of the character described, whereby the same can be readily attached toa shoe in its complete and finished condition.

My improved heel comprises an upper 'or inner portion 1, which may be of any desired thickness and is preferably formed of one or more layers of leather. Arranged below the upper portion 1 of the heel is an intermediate portion or cushion 2 formed of a layer of rubber or other resilient material.

Below the cushion or resilient layer 2 is a metal protecting plate 3 having on its side and rear edges a depending guard -flange 4 which maybe 01" any suitable Width and. thickness. Arranged on the lower side of the plate 3 and within the sptice formed heel even without detracting from the resilienoy or yielding action of the cushion. The filler 5 when arranged on the protect ing plate in the manner described prevents any noise which might be occasioned thereby in walking and toa certain extent prevents the flange 4 from scratching or marring floors. It will thus be seen that a shoe provided with my improved heel will possess all the advantages of the usual form of cushion heel, at the same time the cushion by the flange 4 is a filler 5 of leather 'or other is protected from wear and the life and usefulness of the heel thus greatly. prolonged.

In practice the heel is manufactured in its complete form with the pointed ends of the nails (5 projecting beyond the upper layer? 1 with the heads of said nails embedded in the resilient layer 2 and in contact with a metallic protruding plate 3, whereby the hcel' thus constructed can be readily attached to a shoewithout disconnecting the various layers.
