Abstract
A method of making a hermetic feedthrough at which an optical fiber (1) enters a fiber optic device package (44) said method comprising: supporting a tube (48) in one reference position, passing an optical fiber end portion through the tube so that a fiber part projecting beyond the tube is supported in a second reference position, with the end portion of the fiber located substantially in alignment with a central axis of the tube, injecting molten alloy into the tube through a port in a wall thereof to fill a cavity between the fiber end portion and an inside surface of the tube solidifying the alloy, and sealing the tube within a bore in a housing of the package. In the described embodiment the alloy used is characterised by low thermal coefficient of expansion, minimal relaxation after solidification, and appreciable expansion as it solidifies. <IMAGE>
