Thermoplastic material is continuously heat sealed by transporting said material to a zone of simultaneous heat and pressure to effect the seal in the form of a molten pool, preventing the parent material on each side of the seal from moving laterally away from the molten pool of the seal, continuously causing some of the material of the molten pool to be moved laterally to at least one edge thereof to increase the thickness and strength of the edge of the pool and transporting said material away from said zone of heat and pressure to allow the molten pool of the seal to solidify. The material 10 to be sealed is fed from the left of Fig. 1 between transporting bands 13 of cloth-like material or metal covered therewith and which pass around driven rollers 11 and idler rollers 12, e.g. of silicone rubber. Rollers 15 are provided to adjust the tension of the bands 13. Sealing bands 14 electrically heated by brushes 16 bear on the bands 13 to make an indentation in the molten pool of the seal to cause some of the material thereof to flow to the sides thereof. The patent material is firmly held by the bands 13 and so cannot move laterally away from the seal so that the molten material builds up at the edge of the seal. In a modification, Fig. 3, the sealing band 17 is bevelled to cause lateral movement of the molten material to one edge only of the seal. Examples are given of thermoplastic materials which may be sealed by this method.
