935,814. Making rails; altering physical structure. HUTTENWERK OBERHAUSEN A.G. July 13, 1962 [Oct. 21, 19611, No. 26974/62. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A method of making wear-resistant homogeneous rails free from stress cracks and/or flakes, having a minimum tensile strength of 90 kilogram/mm.<SP>2</SP> by rolling cast rail ingots and subjecting them to controlled cooling comprises rolling the ingots into blooms having from one-fourth to one-sixth the cross-sectional area of the original ingot, cooling the blooms to 200 C. in a controlled manner over a period of days, re-heating them to a rolling temperature whereafter the rolled products are rolled into further intermediate products, conditioned, reheated and rolled into rails. The blooms are cooled from 1050 to 500 C. in a holding furnace for six hours and subsequently to 200 C. during a period of 24 hours. In a modification the cooling is carried out in a hydrogen free atmosphere. Various tablets are given showing cooling temperatures times and hydrogen discharge and diffusion rates. The steel ingots have the following composition: carbon 0.45/0.75% ; silicon 0.07/0.5% ; manganese 0.8/2.1%; phosphorus 0.05% max.; sulphur 0.05% max., and iron the remainder.
