Abstract

819,254. Cradles for lifting stacks of articles. W.S.T. PATENTER A.B. July 24,1956 [April 18, 1956], No. 22840/56. Class 78 (4). A device for lifting a pile of slabs and for releasing them singly, e.g. into a machine, comprises opposed members 3 carrying inflatable gripping tubes 7 and shoes 12 which can be inserted under or withdrawn from the load by rams 15 working through bell cranks 10 and links 14. The distance between the bottom of the tubes 7 and the shoes 12 is adjustable and normally the thickness of a slab. In operation the device is hoisted with the shoes retracted and with a pile of slabs between the tubes 7 into a position for feeding the slabs e.g. into a machine, then the shoes are advanced into the position shown and the tubes 7 deflated and re-inflated. Retraction of the shoes 12 then releases the lowest slab, the rest being supported by the tripping tubes 7. The shoes 12 and their actuating apparatus may be replaced by transverse inflatable tubes. All the tubes may be covered with e.g. leather or rubber for protection, or suitable cloths may be attached in front of the tubes.
