Abstract
Ion-permeable membranes are made by dispersing an ion-exchange resin in an aqueous emulsion of a beinding agent having an electric charge opposite to that carried by the ion-exchange resin, a surface active agent being incorporated in the dispersion to prevent the ion-exchange resin causing the premature coagulation of the emulsion, and then coagulating the emulsion. The binding agent may be natural or synthetic rubber, polyvinyl chloride or a polyvinyl ester and the ion-exchange resin may be a sulphonated cross-linked polystyrene, or cross-linked polystyrene into which quaternary ammonium groups have been introduced. The surface active agent may be the disodium, salt of methylene dinaphthalenesulphonic acid, a condensation product of a fatty alcohol and ethylene oxide, or cetyltrimethylammonium bromide. Coagulation may be effected and a membrane prepared by coating the mixture on a glass plate and drying at 90 DEG C. for 30 minutes, the membrane being thereafter removed from the glass plate by soaking in water.
