Abstract
A process for the manufacture of steel by surface blowing with oxygen comprises directing a stream of oxygen against the surface of the metal, with or without the addition of up to 25 kilograms per ton of metal charged so that the conversion is carried out by oxygen alone without intermediate and concomitant action of slag. The oxygen pressure is preferably insufficient to agitate the surface of the metal, and the stream of oxygen may be directed vertically downwards. In the manufacture of low carbon steels the oxygen blast may be prolonged for some seconds after the completion of decarburization.
