Abstract
Ethylene cyanhydrin is produced by reacting a gas mixture, containing ethylene oxide, obtained by the oxidation of ethylene with hydrogen cyanide, in the presence of water or an aqueous solution of ethylene cyanhydrin containing an amount of an alkaline catalyst to give a pH within the range of 9-12. The hydrogen cyanide may be used as a mixture with inert gases, e.g. the mixture obtained by decomposition of formamide, or by the reaction between carbon monoxide and ammonia or between methane and ammonia. The reaction may be carried out at a temperature in the range 20-70 DEG C. In an example a gaseous mixture containing ethylene oxide (obtained by the catalytic oxidation of ethylene) and a hydrogen cyanide-containing gas (obtained by the catalytic splitting of formamide) are passed through a series of three towers, the first containing a 60 per cent solution of ethylene cyanhydrin in water with 0.2 per cent of NaOH, the second containing a 40 per cent solution with 0.2 per cent of NaOH and the third containing a 0.1 per cent solution of NaOH, to give ethylene cyanhydrin. The process may be carried out continuously.
