Abstract
475,819. Felted fibrous sheet material; wadding. JOHNS-MANVILLE CORPORATION. May 27, 1936, No. 14984. Convention date, May 28, 1935. [Class 96] [Also in Groups IX and XIII] A felted insulating- sheet comprises voidcontaining loosely felted fibrous clusters or nodules, i.e. tufts containing loosely compacted fibres defining air spaces or voids therebetween, and a web of less thickness than the clusters which includes more closely felted fibres interlocking with the cluster fibres and interconnecting the clusters. The felt is produced on a foraminous belt 9, Fig. 1, from a suspension of well-dispersed fibres of mineral wool 15 and void-containing clusters 19. In a modification, clusters may be dropped on to the surface of the wet felt. Water flows through the belt 9 into a receiver 16 while the felt is compacted by air pressure or by passage over a suction member 17 and is wound on a mandrel 18 or formed into bats or laps on a horizontally reciprocating table. A binder such as starch or casein is added to the suspension in the hopper 13 while the finished plies may be united by adhesive. In forming a tubular insulation for pipes, Fig. 4, an inner lining 21, e.g. of asbestos paper, and an outer wrapper 22 of cloth or paper are provided.
