May 12, 1933, No. 13599. [Class 106 (ii).] Apparatus for testing lubricants comprises three or more balls 1 immersed in the lubricant to be tested and clamped in a cup 8 by a ring 9, member 10, and bolts 11 secured to a table 12. A fourth ball 2 is clamped in a holder 3 rotatable by a shaft 5 and pulley 7, and an adjustable force P is applied by way of a base 16 and ball-bearings 15 to the table 12, a spring-balance 14 measuring the moment of the force transferred from the ball 2 to the balls 1 through friction action. In place of balls, partly spherical members may be used, for example, cylinders having one end of semispherical shape to form the contacting surface.
