Abstract

Rotary apparatus comprising a bearing shaft 17, and a rolling member 14 includes a seal unit 11 for containing lubricant and preventing the ingress of matter to the bearing system supporting the rolling member. The seal unit 11 has a cross section with a radial extent greater than its axial extent but less than 11 DIVIDED 2 times its axial extent. The seal is compressed less than 10% between the rolling member 14 and the seal unit 11. In the preferred embodiment, the seal unit is used in a three-cone rock bit and is supported by surface 37 of bearing 19 and surface 35 of bit body 13. <IMAGE>
