Abstract

Display apparatus has a data store 5 in which characters to be displayed are stored as a plurality of linked strings of data, each such string being in respect of all characters having their origins on the same raster line. The data store comprises a frame store 8 having a plurality of locations in which are stored the individual items of the linked strings of data, a pointer store 6 having a separate storage location for each raster line and in each of which locations may be stored the address of a frame store location, and a pointer store address register 7. The data stored at each location of the frame store includes the identity of a character to be displayed, its position in a raster line and the address (if any) of the location within the frame store of the next item of linked data. The video signals for successive raster lines are derived alternately from two line stores 10A, B, one of these line stores being read while the other is being filled with data derived from the linked strings of data stored by the data store in respect of all characters contributing to the raster line in question. The apparatus enables characters to be displaced from regular line position, e.g. to form subscripts, or to be overlapped. <IMAGE>
