A racking device for rotating a drum 7 in a circular knitting machine, e.g. a patterning drum or a guiding drum within the drum a ratchet 12, a pawl 13 for co-operation with the ratchet and driveable from the knitting machine, and an electromagnet 15 for controlling the pawl. <IMAGE>
