Abstract

A vacuum switch has two relatively rectilinearly movable contact members 40, 41 each of U-shape, at least one having a contacting portion 44 straddled by the arms 42 of the other. The terminals 43 are coaxial on the bases of the U's so that the current divides along the arms 42 and into the contacting portions 44 in a manner whereby the magnetic field assists in maintaining a diffuse mode of arcing up to high current values and undesirable space charge effects are reduced. <IMAGE>
