Abstract
1438038 Shaft furnaces ANDCO Inc 26 July 1973 [11 Sept 1972] 35597/73 Heading F4B The bosh of a metallurgical furnace comprises an outer jacket 6 having its interior surface lined with bricks or blocks of carbon or like heat conductive material 16 which is protected by a liner 18 of a material which provides an adhesion surface for the slag produced during the metallurgical reaction within the furnace, and a layer of refractory material 20 is positioned over the lining 18. The construction is positioned so as to place the protective liner 18 clear of the deleterious effects of a tuyere 14 and specified distances from the tuyere are given. The liner 18 is preferably formed of a ferrous material, e.g. carbon steel and closely fits against the heat conducting lining 16, with one end fixed in position and the opposite end being free for expansion movement relative to the lining. The jacket 6 may be exteriorly cooled. The layer 20 offers only an initial protection to the liner 18 during furnace blow in and is eventually replaced by slag formed as a by-product of the reaction with the furnace.
